So yesterday, I spent the evening the with my dear friend Yvette from @yvetteteas , and we did a joint Tea tasting of the 6 different samples of the Ruby Black tea sent over by the lovely @ma.ggie68310 from YC Tea all the way from Taiwan. 😊 And let me just say, the tea tasting session turned out to be very educational for me. 😃
So to begin with, all 6 samples (individually numbered by her) were of the Sun Moon Lake Tea or Ruby Black, but harvested during different seasons, so we thought it would be interesting to check the differences, if any. There were three samples from Summer (Nos. 1, 4 & 5) , one from Spring (No.3) and two from fall (No’s 2&6). We brewed all teas at 90 degrees for 3 mins, gongfu style.
We started with 2 & 6 and found the aroma fine enough with the burnt caramel woody smell, but the flavour was very strong, with a bitterness right from the beginning of the sip and was also quite drying on the palate. Would have to brew this for a shorter time and check if the outcome is different.
Next up was the spring tea (No.3) , that was more delicate in flavour, with a mild sweet floral note that tasted very pleasant. The dark amber liquor was smooth and flavorful, and there was also no bitterness and drying on the palate. We both enjoyed this one the most. ❤️ Lastly, the 3 summer teas (No’s.1, 4, & 5), the flavour of Tea 1 was something between the spring and fall teas. Not as strong as the fall tea, but definitely more robust and full bodied than the spring tea. There was the light sweet note similar to the spring but also a slight bitterness towards the end of the sip and a slight drying in the palate. Tea 4 & 5 were almost similar to Tea 1, though I felt the floral sweet note was slightly more pronounced in the tea 5 than teas 4 & 1. Of the three No. 5 was the best. 🙂
Our favourite of all six though, was the Spring harvested Ruby Black tea (No.3),as the aroma and flavour were just right and very pleasant to sip on. 😊👍
