I’ll be taking over @rps100heroines Instagram this weekend showing a bit of my project called “Hybrid-normalization”.
.
Hybrid-normalization is a project showing the reality of people as individuals, people who are bankers during the day and drag queens at night, or people who don’t identify themselves as blue or pink, don’t stereotype love and don’t fit into boxes. I hope the project raises awareness about differing communities and end the discrimination that hybrid people still face in order to be accepted.
.
The series is officially one year in the making and was shot with various techniques as 35 and 120mm stills, 35mm analogue gifs, polaroids, digital and videos

The final post of my (@meganthebendall) takeover. I am thankful as can be to have been able to partake and thank you for all the kind and supportive feedback and comments.

This is Tracy, often known as 'Champagne Tracy' by Ma. She lives down the street from us.
Luke and I grew up with her sons, playing football in the street and having sleepovers to play Pokemon or Runescape.
She cut Ma's hair into a pixie cut when it began falling out, bought her new tops just to cheer her up and so much more (not to mention she gives great hugs). I always remember one New Year's Eve (before us kids started hanging with friends for NYE), watching Ma, Tracy and the other girls try to figure out how to play games on Xbox Kinect. Definitely one of the funniest things I've seen. I think I have a video of it.
If you're interested in seeing more of my work, learning about upcoming projects or getting in touch, please do at meganbendall.com or @meganthebendall on social medias.

Kim
"The first time was an accident."
.
From as young as five years old, Kim realised that harming herself could distract her from family problems. As a child, she would throw herself off of her bike or cut herself on broken glass. As a teen, her self harm became more serious. Using alcohol and drugs to block out the pain, she would carry a set of razors around with her and regularly engage in unhealthy sexual relationships. Although Kim is now healthy and happily married, the physical evidence of her past has a huge impact on her body confidence. Kim hides her scars in public for fear of being judged, with her biggest concern being that people will think she's a bad mother to her son.

Final day of images from @meganthebendall
The first image here is Reese, taken on 35mm. The scarf she has on was a scarf I was bought when I was around 14 for a birthday, that Ma adopted into her collection and now, it's the start of Reese's collection.
Both were taken around a week after her death, where being near her things felt right and going through her things didn't but I am happy we did. We got to share parts of her with different people, keepsakes and all.

Around one year ago two of my really good friends pushed me to take my negatives out of the vault and do something with it.
.
We picked my most personal project at the time and ‘be had less than a month to edit, print, frame, install and run the whole PR at the same time I was writing a film and working on a very demanding advertising gig.
.
The body of work is called “I’m still here” and is two years in the making, all shot in the desert in California showing places created by people who decided to abandon society so they could live under their own rules.
.
Thank you so much @nikkoalos @paulfirmin @bonds.hackney @ssippi @labyrinth_cos and John McCarthy who’s not on instagram (still waiting for my drawer 🧐)

Last day of the takeover from @meganthebendall
This is Ma's best friend, Auntie Debbie.
Ma made her make tomato and cheese sandwiches for every child's party from birth and doesn't even like them.
She lives near my favourite beach, a nice calm place to just think.

Last of the day from @meganthebendall
This is my cousin Liam and 'great' cousin, Reese. They took a liking to each other.
I'm half Essex, half Newcastle and Liam is my Essex cousin. Reese is from my family in Canada.
Often in the evenings in July we all gathered in the good weather in the back garden and messed about and did a lot of toy excavating, as seen in the second image.

Finley uncovered multiple alien like toys by chipping away at a sandstone like block as well as finding treasure chests with little prizes in. My cousin, his Ma, Leona, was helping him get it out faster.

This is.

Once again, @meganthebendall
Every year I run (or walk) the Race for Life in Newcastle. Always in the name or loved ones.
I do it with various family friends- usually either my Auntie Debbie and friend, Pam, or others. I've done it around 4 or 5 years in total. My Auntie Debbie and Pam have done it almost 17 years in a row.
The first image shows my badge, medal and shirt. The second image shows scanned notes of donations. £25 from my Auntie Kath and a note from my Big Granma asking me to pass money on.

This year I made it my mission to raise as much money as possible, something to make a difference and be proud of and in total, by the 16th of July, I had raised £1,198.
I had a deal with a friend of my brothers that if I reached £1,000, he would give £100 to the amount I raised and when the deadline came around, he donated 10% of what I raised.

Carole "I'm trying to adapt to the changes in my health as I get older."
.
Since entering her 40s, Carole had several significant changes in her life. At 41, she became a first-time mother to twins. Then, at 48, her father, who she hadn't seen for several years, died. She didn't find out about her father's passing until after the funeral, which caused her a lot of distress. Carole then separated from her husband of 18 years and became a single mum. Once she turned 50, her health started to change, too. Carole was affected by depression, was diagnosed with late-onset Type One Diabetes and has recently had two hearing aids fitted. She uses a Flash Glucose Monitoring sensor on her arm which allows her to read her blood sugar level without pricking her fingers. This makes her job as a musician and music teacher more manageable. Carole has worried about having a hypo either while teaching young people or at home with her own children so is constantly checking her monitor. Over the past year, she has realised that she is not immortal and that health does change with age. Carole is working hard to adapt so that she can continue to do the things she loves.

Post number 4 from @meganthebendall
This is my Auntie Kayin, a best friend of Ma's from before I was born. She often babysat us as kids and I always remember her setting up chairs from room to room to avoid our puppy, Jess, biting our ankles. I had to be around 3 or 4.

She now has a 4 year old daughter, Zoë, who drew each of us a card. This was the one she gave to my brother (albeit cropped to fit). In my family, my cousins, uncles and aunts are older than me and since I'm the youngest cousin, I am closer to the age of their children. There are eleven children, all of which called Ma 'Grantie Chris'.

I just nominated the inspirational @janettephoto for #HundredHeroines I grew up with her iconic images of the hip-hop community. She was right there from the beginning capturing the confidence & self-belief they had in their incredible art-form @RPS100Heroines

@meganthebendall again with post 3 of the day.

Documenting my Ma and the positive side of her illness became a sentimental piece of work, something I now cherish.
It began after I found four sticky notes in my room, stating what she was grateful for, who she was grateful for and, in her words, that she was 'a lucky girl'. This is my beautiful (and adorable) Ma, during Easter break. One of our great friends cut her hair into a cute pixie cut and maybe a week later my brother shaved her head for her.
Her sunny disposition was incredible and even in this situation, always smiling. The smile was partially because I was squatting in a bath, though.
