“I was about twelve or thirteen-years-old when the Germans arrived our city in Poland. I was lucky because I was working, washing dishes in a nearby restaurant so I wasn't at home when they took my mother. I was quite blonde with bright eyes so they didn't suspect anything. The family who owned the restaurant knew my mother well so they never told the Germans about me. That is probably the only reason you are talking to me today."

“My mum and sister were both social workers. Growing up I was constantly inspired by their energy and passion, working with some of Ireland’s most vulnerable children. I always loved Ireland, but I knew that for some people life could be very tough here. I dreamed, from a young age, about being able to do something that would make a difference in the world. One day I sat down with a friend in a coffee shop near here, in Grand Canal Dock, and we talked about our goals for life and he asked me what I really wanted to do with my life. I’ll never forget that day because he asked me to describe what that dream looked like, to paint a picture of it in my mind: where I am, what I’m doing and what kind of people are around me. In this vision, I was in a room surrounded by a dynamic team, and we were working together on something that was really big and ambitious that would create a huge change in Ireland. A few years later I became CEO of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland. Every day we work to support these incredible, inspiring people who are having a huge impact in communities all across the country, coming up with new approaches to solve social problems in Ireland. It really is a dream come true for me! I feel very lucky to be a part of this change. And of course it wasn’t only about setting a goal because if all of my goals came true I’d be fluent in Spanish, I’d be super fit and I’d be a whizz at coding computers! But it did start there. The important thing is having a vision, for yourself and for your community and then taking action to bring it closer!” -This interview is part of a collaborative campaign with Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, Find out more in BIO. - #Humansofdublin

“I had this far-away dream that one day I would become a photographer; I knew if I wanted to be successful at it, I would have to specialise in something, to find my own style. My family and friends listened to my plans asking, 'okay, you like taking pictures but are you looking for a real job too?' I wanted to prove to them and to myself that it was possible. I decided to go for it with the belief that I would eventually find a way to make a living. I started to wander around the streets of Tel Aviv taking pictures of almost anything. Later, I thought I would specialise in street signs, nobody did that before! I began wandering around the streets with my camera and a ladder to be able to photograph them at eye level. Walking around with a ladder made me realise why nobody did it before… Next, I decided to try something smaller. I focused on popsicles and ice creams on the beach. I would ask people to hold out their melting ice creams with the beach in the background. I thought about what I really wanted to photograph and I was always in love with the colourful street art of Florentin, it would make a lovely backdrop for a series. So, I would compose a frame in front of a mural and sit there and wait until something happened. An interesting looking person passing by or something unexpected happening. I would upload the photos to my Instagram, and people started liking them and asking about the story behind the murals, about the artists and about the location of them. Florentin is a very old area in Tel Aviv filled with family-owned workshops like carpenters and mechanics. It has a beautiful history. So, because of such an interest, I figured I would organise photo walks around Florentin telling people about the area and the murals. It's been a very successful year filled with new challenges and maybe this is not what I’ll be doing for the rest of my life, but I really enjoy it at the moment.” This series was created in Tel Aviv w/ Vibe Israel

"We used to have this beautiful sailing boat called the Galway Hooker. It was very old Irish style; a fairly small boat, but well built for the Atlantic Ocean. We sailed across the South Atlantic many times on it. We went on holidays and all sorts of get-togethers of old tall ships all over Europe. It only had a very small cabin so we mostly slept outside on the deck. I remember so vividly one night, just before sunset, the sea was so calm and the sky and the clouds were painted in every shade of blue, purple, orange and red you could imagine. We were just laying there looking up at the sky when suddenly a group of so-called flying fish flew out of the water right over our boat like a huge cloud of birds shining beautifully...
I miss my husband so much. I miss going sailing with him. Twenty-seven years wasn't near enough of him. It's so unfair that you men die and leaves us women alone." #humansofdublin, #galwayhooker, #wearedublin

"My favourite YouTube video is 'How to fold a fitted sheet.' You may think I'm nuts, but
that video has 16 million views. I am probably most of those views, and the other half is the people I recommended to watch it. I never knew how to fold a fitted sheet until I came across that video, and to be honest I didn't even think about finding out, but now that I've watched it so many times it became obvious to me. Same sheet, same amount of time, same wardrobe; but two completely different outcomes. It revolutionised my wardrobe anyway. Not only mine, but probably for all those millions of people that watched it too. That video is a perfect example how to be successful in life. You take a problem that seems as if you're the only one bothered by it and you find a solution. There are people who can see things that others may never notice, but they noticed it. Don't let anyone ever put you down for your ideas; it doesn't matter how stupid they sound. We're living in a new world where everything needs to be rediscovered, so keep your eyes open!"//// -CEO of Cloud90 //// We've decided to dedicate this week to some of the inspirational entrepreneurs and creative women we've had the opportunity to meet. "The other day I was at the bus stop, and a lady was waiting a few metres away from me. She looked very sad so I decided to speak to her. I wasn't even acknowledging that she was sad, I just asked her how long she's waiting for the bus. She said it was a while now, and then we just chatted about every day things. And she seemed alright. When the bus arrived I sat down and she sat behind me. About five minutes later she asked if she can sit next to me, and from then on she cried all the way to Dublin. She was very upset about her daughter, who she said had gotten involved with the wrong crowd and was out for nights without saying where she went. She was so worried and just didn't really know what to do. I think she just needed someone to talk to. I read a book once that said, ‘A stranger is just a friend you don't know.’ I may never see her again, but I know in that moment I was her best friend all the way to Dublin." #humansofdublin

"There is this lovely Phillipino lady that comes to the house twice a week for about three hours. I live alone, so she fixes the bed and does a bit of cleaning. I call her a sponge lady, because she also helps me with showering. I don't know how she does it, but she never has a bad day, and she's always smiling and joking with me! The other day she said while she was helping me take a shower 'Don't be getting too excited now!' and I said to her, 'Just be careful lady!' This became a sort of weekly conversation routine between us." #Humansofdublin

“We've been friends since we were little, I was always the thinker and planner and he was the maker and builder. I had the plan in my mind but I would never be able to create it, but he always understood me and came back with a solution. Our business is built around this. We wouldn't be able to open up in the morning without each other.
When he turned thirty I bought him Naftali as a present because it reminded me of him, as the good troll or fairy of the shop. Naftali sat at the tip jar for years, he had his own regulars and he was a real personality in the shop. One day someone stole him, only him, without the tip jar which made us sad. But then a couple of weeks later, one of our very nice regulars came in with this; a slightly bigger Naftali she bought as a present.
I always say that we spend more time working together than we spend with our partners so in a way Naftali is the child of our friendship… Does that sound weird?” This series was created in Tel Aviv w/ @VibeIsrael.

"I buy her flowers every week! We only got married two months ago, and we saw each other for the first time about six months ago when she moved here from the US. I got to know her on the internet and we were writing to each other for about a year before the first Skype call. It's interesting where technology is heading, I never thought that one day I would get married to someone from the other side of the world. In my time we went to a dance and met girls from the neighbouring village or, if you were lucky, from the next city.“

"I used to work as a personal assistant for a CEO of a high-tech start up. It was good money but I hated it. I've always had a problem with high energy levels so when I had to sit in front of a computer in a small office for a whole day I got grumpy and depressed. My life changed when I decided to adopt my dog. I was still working in the office so like everyone else I had to hire a dog walker. Paying so much money for someone else to spend time with her made me think about my life and everything seemed to fall into place with the idea of changing my career. We have a saying that 'If you don't own a pet in Tel Aviv, you are not a proper Tel Avivi!' Tel Aviv has the highest number of dogs per capita in the world and because of that, you see many, many dogs with their walkers all around the city. After quitting my assistant job, I became very popular as a walker because instead of taking lots of dogs at the same time, I focused on a couple at a time, paying attention to dogs with similar energy levels, sizes and ages. Most of the dogs I walk become friends and because they like to play together their owners get to meet and spend time together so eventually, they become friends as well. Tel Aviv has such a diverse culture so creating connections between dogs and people has become the most important part of my job."

This morning ferrying our kids to sports, I spotted Gerry outside having a #insomniacoffee. All dressed up in his #sundaybest for #mayovdublin #gaa.We stopped to get petrol and I ran back to get a couple of photos of him. He asked where we were headed, so he ended getting a lift across town with us. So we left him off at Drumcondra with some #mayo supporters. He added that "people always think my suit is by #louiscopeland" 😊
