Paul Dibble / Huia Feather / cast bronze #pauldibble #waikatouniversity #nzart #huiafeather

In 1891 at the age of one the Hon. Huia Onslow was made a chief of Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Huia. His godmother Queen Victoria bestowed the names Victor Alexander on NZ’s first vice-regal baby and Ngati Huia gave Huia, by which he was always known. Here he wears a huia feather, a sign of the highest rank within Maoridom. His name was offered to highlight the vulnerable status of the huia bird, swipe to see. In 1892 Governor Lord Onslow and the infant Huia both signed the proclamation protecting the huia. “Favoured by circumstance, strong and handsome” he became a paraplegic at the age of 20 and went on to become a biochemist and marry notable biochemist Muriel Wheldale. He died at the age of 31 in 1922 and in the same decade the huia was extinct. Before returning to the UK Lord Onslow purchased the Meeting House Hinemihi which is still in the grounds of Clandon Park, the only Maori meeting house in the UK. Huia’s siblings were the 5th Earl of Onslow and the Countesses of Halifax and Iveagh #huia #huiaonslow #ngatihuia #murielwheldaleonslow #ngatiraukawa #queenvictoria #biochemist #lordonslow #viceregal #huiafeather #extinctbirds #hinemihi

A bit of white painting happening today.

"Twelve Heavens" is a cosmic portrait of the twelve celestial realms of Rangi. From the summit of the heavens, Tikitiki-o-rangi, to the realm closest to earth, Rangi-nui (Sky Father). .

One of the rarest feathers out there and over 100 years old. Our popular Huia feather as a necklace. What do you think?

#MuseumMonday: A brand-new and very exciting acquisition at the Jesse Peter Museum. This is a Maori old-style Hei-tiki carved jade with inlaid paua shell eyes. It measures 3.2" by 1.9" and is carved by hand
by a contemporary New Zealand artist, Wayne Turnbull. The Maori Hei-tiki is a symbol of the first human being - worn by Maori men and women, and it is thought to bring abundance, prosperity, and fertility.
The painting (2nd photo) shows a Maori woman, Hinepare, of the Ngāti Kahungunu tribe, wearing a Hei-tiki around
her neck, pounamu earring and shark tooth earring, and two huia feathers in her hair. She wears a cloak
with black fringe border and has a moko design on her chin. This painting by Gottfried Lindauer is from
circa 1890.
Watch for this and other artifacts from the South Pacific in an upcoming exhibit at the #SRJC museum, in
