It might come as a surprise for some that our great god Odin is half giant. Bestla is her name and a frost-giantess (jötunn -plural jötnar) she is, the daughter of the powerful frost-giant Bolthorn, who married the As-man Borr and had three sons - Odin, Vili, and Vé. She is usually shown as a tall woman with long white hair. Bestla’s older brother is the giant Mimir, whose living head lies in the well of Mimirsbrunnr.

Andvari and his ring. Before Tolkien’s famous ring to rule them all there is the Norse legend of the ring, named "Andvaranaut" or "Andvari's Gift". It had the fabled ability to make gold. Andvari was a dwarf that lived under a waterfall; having the power to transform into a fish whenever he wanted. He used his ring to make great wealth for himself. Jealous of the power of the ring, the mischievous god Loki uses a net to capture Andvari while he is transformed into a pike. As a condition of letting him go, Loki demands the ring and his horde of gold, to which Andvari reluctantly agrees. However, Andvari cursed the ring, that misfortune and peril would befall who-so-ever should possess it. Loki passed the cursed ring onto Hreidmar, king fo the dwarves, as a penance for killing his son Otr. Then, Otr's brother, Fafnir, killed Hreidmar and stole the ring; transforming into a fearsome dragon to guard it. The great Hero Sigurd (or Siegfried in Wagners epic) killed the dragon Fafnir and gave the ring to his beloved Brynhildr , a shieldmaiden, and valkyrie, as a gift. Tradgedies befall both Sigurd and Brynhildr, until Queen Grimhild of the Niebelungs (or dwarves) tricked the pair into marrying into her own family; thereby bringing the curse of the ring into her house.

Skaði ,daughter of the giant Thiazi. It is said that he kidnapped a goddess and was killed. She wanted revenge for the death of her father. The Aesir didn’t want any more problems so they agreed . On conditions that a god made her laugh and that she could chose and marry a god. The first condition was met when trickster Loki made her laugh. To meet the second condition she was only allowed to look at the god’s feet to pick her partner. She was secretly in love with Balder as he was the most handsome god of them all, so she went for the cleanest and best looking feet but was disappointed to find they were not Balder’s. Instead she had picked the Sea God Njord and not long after, married him.
Their marriage was difficult and after a while they separated because he loved to leve near the sea whereas she loved the mountains. Later in life she remarried but there are conflicting stories of who she married; Ullr, the God of Skis or Odin, the god of War and Death. Skadi rules over mountains, wilderness, winter, revenge, knowledge, damage, justice
She is often depicted hunting while on skis/ snowshoes or on a snow-capped mountain. #vikings #viking #norse #norsemythology #mythology #pagan #odin #jormungand #loki #fenrir #midgard #ragnarok #thor #myth #folklore #witch #goddess #valkyrie #folktales #norse #valhalla #hugginandmunnin #huginandmunin #geriandfreki #freki #geri #odinswolves #asatru

The Norns
There are three Norns (Old Norse: “Nornir”) in Norse mythology and they live at the well Urd in Asgard (home of the Gods and Goddesses). Their names are Urd “What Once Was” (Old Norse “Urðr”), Verdandi “What Is Coming into Being” (Old Norse “Verðandi”) and Skuld “What Shall Be” (Old Norse “Skuld”), the three Norns are the Goddesses of fate in Norse mythology. They spend most of their time spinning the threads of life, and deciding the fate of all living beings. The Norns does this by sitting at the root of Yggdrasil and weave the faith of every child into a web or thread.
The three Norns starts every morning by placing a rooster at the top of Yggdrasil. The crowning of the rooster is a wake up call for all the Gods and Goddesses in Asgard. Every morning the Norns also carry water from Urd’s well, and pour it over Yggdrasil the tree of life. The water from this well is very important to to keep Yggdrasil green and healthy. The Norns was very respected in Viking age, it was quite common to serve a woman who had just given birth to a child some porridge, they called this porridge for “Norn porridge”. The Vikings believed the Norns were always nearby whenever a child was born. The porridge was considered an offering to the Norns, They hoped the porridge would please the Norns and secure good health for the mother and the child.

Geri and Freki, Odin’s wolf companions.
After creating the world with his brothers, Odin became lonely traveling by himself so he created the first wolves: Geri and Freki (both meaning “the ravenous” or “greedy one”). The ruler of Asgard and these furry canines quickly became inseparable. They traveled the world together and slowly populated the Earth with wolves, their offspring.
In the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning the enthroned figure of High explains that Odin gives all of the food on his table to his wolves Geri and Freki and that Odin requires no food, for wine is to him both meat and drink. #vikings #viking #norse #norsemythology #mythology #pagan #odin #jormungand #loki #fenrir #midgard #ragnarok #thor #myth #folklore #witch #goddess #valkyrie #folktales #norse #valhalla #hugginandmunnin #huginandmunin #geriandfreki #freki #geri #odinswolves #asatru

The sword Tyrfing
Svafrlami a king and a grandson of Odin, managed to capture two Dwarves aboveground. He decided the best thing to do was to have them create a magic sword for him. The sword would have a hilt made of gold, it would never miss, it would never rust and it would be sharp enough to cut metal as easily as cloth. But the Dwarves weren’t happy about being forced to work like that. So they cursed the blade. They made it so that someone would die every time the sword was drawn and they said the sword would be the source of three great evils. Then, just to really prove their point, they cursed the blade so that it would cause the death of King Svafrlami. The sword cut a bloody path through several countries before the curse was finally broken. #vikings #viking #norse #norsemythology #mythology #pagan #odin #jormungand #loki #fenrir #midgard #ragnarok #thor #myth #folklore #witch #goddess #valkyrie #folktales #norse #valhalla #hugginandmunnin #huginandmunin #tyrfing

This aspect of the connection is indicated by the names of Hugin and Munin. Hugin (Old Norse Huginn) comes from the word hugr, “thought.” Munin (Old Norse Muninn) comes from the word munr, which is more difficult to translate, but can encompass the concepts of “thought,” “desire,” and “emotion.” (The two ravens’ names are often translated as “Thought” and “Memory” in popular works on Norse mythology, and “Thought” is quite accurate, but “Memory” is at best imprecise and rather arbitrary.) The two names therefore can’t be neatly distinguished from one another; they overlap to the point of being virtually synonymous. This reflects the fact that, in the sources, Hugin and Munin don’t have distinct personalities. They’re a duplicate form of the same underlying idea. More specifically, their names refer to their being concrete visualized forms of the “thought” of Odin. #vikings #viking #norse #norsemythology #mythology #pagan #odin #jormungand #loki #fenrir #midgard #ragnarok #thor #myth #folklore #witch #goddess #valkyrie #folktales #norse #valhalla #hugginandmunnin #huginandmunin

Hugin and Munin (pronounced “HOO-gin” and “MOO-nin”; Old Norse Huginn and Muninn, the meaning of which will be discussed below) are two ravens in Norse mythology who are helping spirits of the god Odin.
They sit on his (Odin’s) shoulders and whisper all the news which they see and hear into his ear. He sends them out in the morning to fly around the whole world, and by breakfast they are back again. Thus, he finds out many new things and this is why he is called ‘raven-god’ (hrafnaguð).
In the Eddic poem Grímnismálin Odin says:
Hugin and Munin
Fly every day
Over all the world;
I worry for Hugin
That he might not return,
But I worry more for Munin.
The connection between Odin and ravens is very old and very deep. Already in the sixth and seventh centuries AD – well before the beginning of the Viking Age in the late eighth century – visual depictions of Odin on helmets and jewelry frequently picture him accompanied by one or more ravens. #vikings #viking #norse #norsemythology #mythology #pagan #odin #jormungand #loki #fenrir #midgard #ragnarok #thor #myth #folklore #witch #goddess #valkyrie #folktales #norse #valhalla #hugginandmunnin #huginandmunin
