Last year, a friend of mine pulled me into the “Who has the best homecoming” discussion. So I blogged about it... HOWARD HOMECOMING 2016
Its one of the most joyous events that my wife and I experience. The amount of time we spend smiling and laughing is amazing and gives us a euphoric like feeling. It is said that laughter is medicine for the soul. That it helps blood pressure and releases endorphins. I imagine that this is the reason why so many of the my fellow alums make the pilgrimage to the Mecca each year for “The incomparable Howard University Homecoming. Not even realising that their attendance is better than going to the doctor.
I saw a really cool statement about HBCU homecomings that said in part, “it's a family reunion, a block party, a cookout, a kick back, a festival, a revival, an oasis.” What a true statement. It’s all of those things and even more.
Some say that Howard’s homecoming is like none other on the planet. There is the legendary Yard Fest that brings international superstars like Drake and Common to perform. 10s of thousands of people in a simultaneous “swag surf” is certainly not something people see every day. You may bump into Howard alums like Taraji P Henson or Debbie Allen on the historic campus. Maybe you’ll see current student, Nick Cannon walking around or newly Elected United States Senator Kamala Harris.
Some say seeing the historic HU Marching Band is the best part of Homecoming, or the student run fashion show is the must have ticket.
For me, it was a unique time in my life and I met my gorgeous wife while a student there. For us it's simply the comfort of going home again. What that feels like, the warmth and familiarity.
Howard’s homecoming is a world event, a spectacle, a National conversation. Alumni from across the US, and all over the world descend upon our Nation’s Capital and “take over the city”. We are literally EVERYWHERE, that weekend. Maybe we attend a fundraising GALA of some type, go to a happy hour and reminisce with old friends. We may attend the President’s state of the Institution talk or engage in a panel discussion on world events and topics germane to our beloved alma mater.
