@raw_mirez | “H-Town gets Down!” is inspired by the street art, graffiti, and urban arts culture of East End Houston. Artist Josuè Ramírez (Rawmirez), writes: “the saying is [a] perfect way to sum up the city’s mad vibez! H–TOWN is always down, to party, to help each other up and to show love to their community!” The shiny, over-sized “ghetto-blaster” alludes to the influence of hip-hop and funk on urban artists and features audio of local funk and hip-hop music. Rawmirez is a self-taught artist practicing in the Rio Grande Valley. His inspiration is derived from the landscape, everyday objects, and practices of the area, which he recreates through the mediums of painting, sculpture and murals. Rawmirez explores contemporary piñata making in various styles. Rawmirez graduated from the University of Texas with Bachelor of Arts in Mexican American Studies. His work has been exhibited in various Texas galleries including Mexicarte, Galleria 409, K Space Contemporary, and the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts. Rawmirez’s public art has been featured in Mexicarte Museum’s El Mero Muro project, Piñatas on the Esplanade, and in the 2017 HUE Mural Festival.

@o.emmanue.l | Quetzalcóatl (Mayan name: Kukulcán), the Feathered Serpent, is a major deity of the ancient Mexican pantheon. Representations of a feathered snake occur as early as the Teotihuacán civilization (3rd to 8th century CE) on the central plateau. At that time, Quetzalcóatl seems to have been conceived as a vegetation god—an earth and water deity closely associated with the rain god Tlaloc. The myth goes that that the god Quetzalcóatl gave maize to humans; during the 5th Sun, the god spotted a red ant carrying a maize kernel. He followed the ant and reached the place where maize grew, the “Mountain of Sustenance”, where Quetzalcóatl turned himself into a black ant and stole a kernel of corn to bring back to humans to plant. Emmanuel Nuño Arámbula’s sculpture highlights the maize legend, bringing it to life using non-GMO corn husks. Nuño Arámbula works with Chimera Art Magazine, Brown Berets of Houston, and Absolem's Midtown Mojo Mfg. and is a Houston activist, artist, and musician recognized for his performance art, graffiti work and art happenings throughout the Houston area.

@texasartasylum + @sassyporcupine | “Nature's Luchadores” depicts a rabbit wrestling with a two-headed serpent, suspended from a free-standing tree by the serpent’s tail. Using upcycled paper, fabric, wood and glue, the design funks up traditional animal motifs and piñata mounting standards, with a unique twist. The sculpture is designed by artist, photographer, maker and alchemist Nicole Baer, who creates magic from upcycled materials, and serves as team leader. As the retail store and materials manager at Texas Art Asylum, Baer brings jazz hands and a curatorial eye to the tons of materials that are donated by Houston’s businesses and residents. A passionate and independent animal rescue advocate, Baer is also personally responsible for happy outcomes for dozens of Houston’s abandoned and neglected pets. Team members for this project include: Erin Baer, architect, designer and book binder; Ramona Brady, Texas Art Asylum founder and General Manager; Mortimer Ex, collage artist; Jaz Henry, mixed media cyanotype artist.
