This morning FB reminded me that a year ago I was on a trip in Bosnia, with a recorder in one hand and a notepad in the other, conducting research on traditional tattooing among Croatian women for my dissertation.
*What a year* has it been! Looking back at it almost feels surreal, so much has happened since then - I graduated, said goodbye (or rather, arrivederci) to Venice, moved to Edinburgh and found a cosy little flat to live in with Hayden, started painting full time, got shortlisted for The Book Illustration Competition by Folio Society, received a highly commanded award for the Kelpies Illustration & Design Prize, seen my work exhibited at London House of Illustration, had the honour of designing the Beltane Fire Festival 30th Anniversary poster, signed book contracts, and now I'm doing what makes me happy: working with local publishers on illustrating stories that will bring a bit of long forgotten magic back to this world, as well as working on my Compendium of Witches in the bits of free time I have left.
I can't say that I am exactly where I want to be because due to - call it ambition, stubbornness, perfectionism - I'm the kind of person who always looks one step ahead at what's the next thing I can do to improve, which often leads to frustration and exhaustion.
But today I feel like I should remind myself not to underestimate even the smallest step, as long as it's in the right direction.
I should take a moment to enjoy the view and be thankful :) ×
