It’s devastating 🙏🏻✨ I pray for my friends, their families and everyone in the danger zone!! #goflorida #gocaribbean ❗️only 3 monsters of them in history and I picture it as it was yesterday – watching CNN or the weather forecast satellite image on the local newspaper showing a weird looking spiral cloud!! STATUS: only a few hours to go!!! A last opportunity to prepare yourself for the unknown. With the age of 15 I had no idea about the severe danger of a natural catastrophe. Being a teenager back then I asked myself what a so called “strong wind” should actually do?! Yet, I remember people got more and more nervous on the streets. Still No idea How to feel? What to fear? To realize what eventually is happening tonight in paradise 🌪🌴🌊 My Story? Here we go... Some matches(1), candles(2), duct-tape(3) to secure large glass windows, big nails(4) and some wooden slats(5) to bang them protecting the door of our ocean front bungalow was all the tools we got. My beloved grandmas and my survival-kit. With my passport and some $$$ taped around my chest I did the only thing I could do — WAIT & SURVIVE! Eventually the storm came with insane speed and lasted almost all night!
It was 1992 Hurricane Andrew | a Category5 Hurricane! A monster of highest classification in the scale. Exceeding speeds beyond 250km/h (156mph). The morning after I sadly realized the impact & devastation such a thing can cause! Communication to Europe was cut off for 4 days! It felt like months for us. At the time with no cell phones, no instant messaging and hardly internet my mother back home could not get a hold of us and neither was the embassy able to help or provide any status about the situation overseas. I don’t want to imagine how my mum must have felt – I’m sorry for her what she had to go through that week! I only know for myself. The feeling of helplessness is overwhelming!
