I don't often talk about parenting here. Mostly because when I began this blog I needed something that was my own. A space where I could just be Cristina. I needed a place where I wasn't Jack's mom.

I went all in with the natural birth, extended nursing, attachment parenting and more. While I don't regret my choices, I do regret letting those choices supersede my need for self care. In the two years I nursed my son I was his main source of nutrition and comfort. It took a severe toll on my emotional and physical well being.

I wrote out more thoughts on this, the recent @balancedbitespodcast really got my wheels turning. I plan to share them on the blog soon. In the mean time mamas... give yourself grace and remember to reach out to family, friends or community. It takes a village.

Make your body happy and it'll return the favor ❤️
Last year, and into the first half of this year, my body was NOT happy. It was pretty pissed off. When I finished competing last year my coach (@jamidebernard) took one look at me and said "I want you to get your hormones tested." I did that, only to find out every single hormone in my body was completely out of whack.
In the picture on the left, I felt "heavy" every day. Kind of like a combination of being bloated and holding water from eating something really salty. That was every single day from morning to night for MONTHS.
I'm not going to blame competing specifically, although it's certainly a part of what happened, but I had also been taking birth control since I was 16 and I personally think that messing with your hormones for so long and from a young age just CAN'T be good.
So as many of you know, when I found out my hormones were jacked I went into full defense mode and did every single natural thing I possibly could (listen to the @higherhealthmedia podcast I did for more info on that). And it took about 6 months, but then my body started to respond better to food, look a little tighter, feel a little better. And every day has been a little bit better since (while eating way more food!)
I can't give one broad recommendation for how to "fix" your hormones - and I'm still technically not an expert - but all you can do is be resourceful and listen very closely to your body. I know a lot of you are struggling with this as well so feel free to ask questions ❤️
*Also, this is not an invitation for "you still looked good on the left" comments - I felt like 💩 so it doesn't matter what I looked like. And for my body, that's a pretty bloated look.

Lazy weekend with one of my favorite smoothies for a tummy on the fritz: avocado+frozen strawberries+fresh orange juice+unsweetened coconut yogurt+ice and water as needed.
I'm normally not one to make smoothies reminiscent of Orange Julius...too much sugar, but my little sister (health food hater extraordinaire) was visiting and I wanted to make her something nutritious that tasted amazing and after one miraculous try, this perfect little concoction was created! I keep the orange juice to a minimum, just enough for flavor, then add water as needed.

Natural Freezer Pops Peaches & Cream: Ingredients
5 ounces coconut milk
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
12 ounces frozen peaches
2 ounces coconut cream
⅓ cup water
1–2 drops doTERRA Lemon Essential oil
Instructions
To make cream, blend together coconut milk, 1 tablespoon honey, and vanilla extract and set aside. Next, blend frozen peaches, cream, water and lemon oil together until smooth. Alternate filling mold with cream and peach mixture until full. Freeze for about one hour while soaking wooden sticks. Remove from freezer and add sticks. Freeze for 2 additional hours and enjoy. .

One of our favourite fruits, a nutrient-rich serving of kiwifruit (2 kiwis) has twice the vitamin C of an orange, as much potassium as a banana & are high in magnesium. The fuzzy fruit is sky-high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, both of which are essential for promoting heart health, regulating digestion. And for all the pregnant Women & mamas, you'll be happy to know that kiwifruit is also a great source of folic acid, a nutrient that has been shown to prevent against neural tube defects. 🤰

I know, we only do what we've learned, but it's time to unlearn this one. ;-) Once you learn how to swap foods in a different way, instead of relying on the convenience prepared "diet" foods, you find it isn't more difficult OR more expensive.
Take the time, heal your gut and get your hormone signals back on track. Get healthy, and then see where you are. I have yet to hear anyone say they regret getting healthy, but I hear people say all the time that they wish they would have done it years earlier. <3

I love these ladies (and Chuck, of course!) Our chicken run is also our compost pile, which is about 2 acres. We give our ladies (and Chuck) all our scraps, and it's amazing to see produce stems, seeds and wilted leaves turn into such delicious, nutritious and versatile protein.

We eat a sh*t ton of eggs! Seriously, I think between the two of us, my partner and I eat about 20+ eggs per week. On top of that, we get to trade eggs for local grass-fed meat, which is awesome. Oh, the joys of living in the country!

The two naturally hatched chicks from earlier this summer are doing great, and we just started caring for another 11 baby peep peeps, which will almost double our flock.

Next year, we're going to introduce ducks, geese, turkeys and guinea fowl (and Soay Sheep...fingers crossed!). SO looking forward to it! I can't get enough.

Confession, I have a weird hobby. Some like to "call shotgun" to jump in the front seat of the car. I claim the carcasses from roasts when at our friend and family gatherings 😜. I cannot imagine the bones going to waste and luckily everyone is super happy to pass them right along to me. .

To me, bone broth is one of the most healing and magical foods. I love being able to utilize all parts of the animal and minimize waste (especially since their lives were taken). I am full of gratitude for this, the farmer that processed the animal, and those whom raised them with love. .

I like to make my broth super flavorful. I add a ton of veggies, kombu, and herbs during the simmering process (which also ups the mineral value!).

Bone broth doesn't have to be complicated. It can be just bones, water, and apple cider vinegar. You make it to what your palate craves. .

This haul will give me just shy of 7 gallons! There are several whole chicken carcasses, chicken feet, carrots, onion, celery, sweet potato, leeks, kombu, garlic, rosemary, thyme, oregano, salt, pepper, apple cider vinegar, and water in this batch. I will simmer this for 24 hours until it's liquid gold is ready!
