#Repost from @mission_blue with @regram.app ... Pohnpei in Micronesia is far from the normal tourist destination. And although few have visited these remote reefs, they too are in danger of becoming lost. Over-fishing and coral bleaching are just a few of the stressors these magical reefs have to combat. ⠀

I was able to join the award-winning scientist, Dr. Sonia Rowley, to explore the mysteries of the Twilight Zone. She studies the evolution and ecology of marine animals at depths of 140 meters with specialized scuba technology. Although she has to spend 6 hours underwater slowly coming up from this depth, she is rewarded with discovering new species on most of her dives!⠀

One highlight for me was watching the schools of barracuda gather and hug the reefs. They would glide by in graceful formation and were an excusable distraction from the research!⠀

Cocos Island is a small island and cluster of pinnacles in the Pacific 340 miles off the coast of Costa Rica, uninhabited, deeply forested, teeming with life, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.

Cocos is known for its sharkiest water with HUGE schooling Scalloped Hammerheads as well as other shark species from Galapagos, blacktip, tiger, to the occasional whale shark, and the list goes on. Our favorite sites were Bajo Alcyone and Dirty Rock (in the pic), both with established cleaning stations and deep dives at up to 35m.

Who is this bright and pretty fish? Yes, it's a Mandarin fish!
.
Did you know that the Mandarin Fish is one of only two fish that has a blue coloration due to a cellular pigment. That’s right, only this fish and a closely related species, the Psychedelic Mandarin, use cyanophores to make their spectacular blue colouring. .
The common blue in other fish is created from light interference as a result of flat, thin, reflecting purine crystals. Sure, it may not sound like that big of a deal but it does make the Mandarin Fish unique….and it does create an amazing blue colour. .
Although they are quite common throughout their range you may have a tough time spotting the Mandarin Fish in their natural environment. Wait a minute! .
There is no way this fish wouldn’t stand out, right? .
That is what you would think! But they are rather small with an average size of 6 cm (2.3″) and they are usually hanging out on the ocean floor….
.
Therefore, you had better keep your eyes open while swimming through the reefs of the Coral Triangle. .

Diatoms make up to 20-25% of Earth's oxygen through photosynthesis. These tiny organisms are single celled algae, and play an important role in Earth's ecosystem!

Thanks to funding from @nfwf and support from @theoceanfoundation and collaboration from commercial fishers we've been able to remove over 7#TONS of derelict fishing gear in Puerto Rico!

➳ Our fates are inseparably and colossally dependent on the fate of our oceans. 🌊 I’ve lived (literally) on the ocean for so long, and now we live as neighbours. And something that continues to astonish me, is how many people have been taught next-to-nothing about this great deep blue planet. There are children living 10 miles inland, who have never seen a sea star. This makes me want to cry. What are we doing wrong, that our children don’t know what gives them - gives us all - life? 🌊

A study in the Marine Policy journal (May 2018) has shown yet again just how important human attitudes and beliefs towards #sharks are for effective #sharkconservation.
.
The study assessed attitudes towards sharks in the #Galapagos and showed that an understanding of the environmental role of sharks and how dangerous (or not) they appeared to be, had the greatest influence on peoples’ attitudes towards conserving them.
.
Having knowledge of, or experience with, sharks also influenced attitudes towards conserving them.
.
As always, education and 💗 is everything.
.
Initiatives and people such as @sharkeducation @sharkguardian @juansharks @oceanramsey @thelifeofrileynz @leigh_de_necker @sharkdivingxperts @biminisharkgirl @horizoncharters @alisontowner @apexsharkexpeditions @shark_explorers @nina.n.daniels are giving just that for their love of 🦈🦈
.
Support them, share their work and be inspired to make a change in your own communities. Use your voice for #good
.
“In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught."

Today I am hoping this year’s Shark Week will create new shark advocates and I am loving this image of a rather sleepy looking Galapagos shark in #Hawaii by @coryfults Check out Cory’s awesome 📷 😍🌊

“Ten percent of the big fish still remain. There are still some blue whales. There are still some krill in Antarctica. There are a few oysters in Chesapeake Bay. Half the coral reefs are still in pretty good shape, a jeweled belt around the middle of the planet. There's still time, but not a lot, to turn things around.” Sylvia Earle
