In 1978, a diving accident rendered Paul Kelly a quadriplegic at the age of 23. He discovered hand cycling in 2006 after watching his daughter run the Marine Corps marathon and he became obsessed with the sport. Now 62, he’s participated in over 100 full and half marathons, and rides and raises money for Hope for The Warriors, a charity for wounded combat veterans. Paul trains regularly on an 18-mile route near his home in Beaufort along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, and used his civil engineering background to trick out his bike with gadgets that track his progress and shave minutes off his time. His discipline and tech will come in handy when he competes in the Boston Marathon on April 16 and celebrates his 40th year since his accident. For the @wsj. Thanks @baxmiller for driving me around so I could shoot photos out the back of your SUV. #hopeforthewarriors @hope4warriors #quadriplegic #handcycle #obx #crystalcoast #makeportraits #bostonmarathon #veterans
1: Paul's wife, Sally, helps ready his bike.

2: Buttons allow Paul to shift the bike's gears with his chin.

3: Paul climbs the bridge to Atlantic Beach over the intercoastal waterway on a training ride for the Boston Marathon. The strenuous climb can take 10 minutes.

4: Paul paused for a portrait after crossing the intercoastal waterway.

5: Paul Kelly has limited use of his fingers, so custom handles that grip his wrists allow him to push and pull the crank arm.

6: Paul passes by Fort Macon State Park.

7: A cadence sensor allows Paul Kelly to monitor his RPMs, or how many revolutions he makes with this arms per minute.

8: Paul passes by colorful beach houses on his route.

9: Paul’s American flag.

I’m putting the sprig appliqués on the Navy mugs- and I gotta say I like how they’re turning out. Now I just need to come up with a better name for the collection...suggestions are appreciated.

9 days to go until our 184 mile journey. This picture is from the beginning - day 1, last year. Great friends who came out to run with me from the start. This is at the opening ceremony which will also be held this year at 10am Saturday 4/21 at the Elks Lodge in Huntington. All Welcome! GoTeamEva.org #suffolkfederal #hopeforthewarriors

This sprig appliqué came out perfectly! The sprigs are pretty hit and miss, so when one comes out as nicely as this one, I have a party on the inside.

New greenware is on the shelf. Once the handles on the mugs firm up, I’ll be adding sprig appliqués. They are going to be US Navy themed.

Throwback Thursday! The pic on the left is the group that participated in the 2016 9/11 Promise Run. The pic on the right is the group that participated in the 2017 9/11 Promise Run. Yes! There was growth - in fact we doubled the amount of money raised! Folks - I want to keep growing it - let's make this year BIG! Let's get more teams! Raise more $$! 100% goes to charity!! Let's stand together, united, to remember and honor! #TBT911PromiseRun #USA #HOPEFORTHEWARRIORS #GRATEFUL
