Hey everyone! I'll be working with @nataraj_express in Vietnam to raise funds to save seahorses from being dried out and made into traditional Chinese medicine, food, drink or sold. These beautiful creatures are being fished off of the reef and shallow open waters in the 100s or 1000s, almost every day.
Our plan is to get donations from people who support our efforts to buy these seahorses from the tanks in the market, and introduce them into the marine protected reefs where people can scuba dive and see them. Right now there are almost none on the reefs around Hon Mun, the diving island of Nha Trang. I have done hundreds of dives around there, and have seen maybe 4 seahorses over the years. It's really sad.
Apart from the donations, we will be in Nha Trang, offering introductory scuba lessons to people who are keen to learn, or certified divers who want to fundive. Furthermore, the seahorses that we raise funds to save will be released with our students or divers who are on the boat with us that day. I will take pics and videos (and tag the people who were able to donate) and post them here.
The prices fluctuate per seashorse depending on the stock, but they are an average of 10$ per seahorse (depending on size/availability). It sounds crazy to put a price to these poor creatures. Any donation would be appreciated!
I will also need to fund the diving and trips out on the boat, although I am hoping that the dive community of Nha Trang will support us and cover those costs, which is not much. If any dive shops are reading this, please let me know your thoughts.
After we have released the seahorses and spent some time in the water with them, we will do a dive for enjoyment, as well as a reef clean up, collecting any foreign objects such as plastics, ropes, cans, even organics which shouldn't have found their way into the ocean.
For now we would like to create the awareness and get the word out of our plan. If you are in support of our initiative and would like to donate, please do so through PayPal: firstname.lastname@example.org
Please feel free to repost, share or tag.
Thank you very much!
