Prostitution has developed a very negative connotation in today’s society. I believe this is due to how movies and tv shows depict prostitutes as skanks or sluts, and people’s lack of media literacy. People who are media illiterate will blindly accept this as the truth about all people who exchange their body for money or basic needs, rather than analyzing and questioning the reality of their different situations. Many homeless people, especially homeless youth, are forced to trade sex for shelter, food, or clothing. This is called survival sex. According to an article published by the New York Times in 2009, one-third of homeless teens resort to survival sex at some point during their time on the streets. Some young girls also sleep with one older man, or a “sugar daddy” who acts as their provider. This can often lead to the opportunity for sexual abuse or assault from other men, such as the sugar daddy’s friends. While survival sex among the homeless can be used in exchange for drugs or alcohol, they are most commonly seeking shelter.
