"How I Spent My June" by De Ann Marie Odom
Well, this is really just the last 3 weeks: Saw 11 plays (10 Hollywood Fringe and 1 Fierce Backbone), 4 short films (8 Aprons), and 9 feature films (Moka, The Big Sick, The Beguiled, Dawson City: Frozen Time, Maudie, The Hero, It Comes at Night, My Cousin Rachel, the spectacular 30-year re-release of Maurice!). Yeah, that's right. For those of you who don't know, I'm a theatre AND film junkie. And I have a more than full-time day job. Oh, yeah, and my own acting and writing projects. But whatever.
I'm sure everyone is anxious about awards night, but I want you to know, my fellow Fringers, you are all winners in my book! Having once had a theatre company and having also made a handful of short films, I know what you've all been through. You're elated but exhausted, the mail and laundry are piling up, and you'd really like a vacation but can't afford one. Guess what, though? You made it! You crossed the finish line! You created art, and it was seen by the masses and celebrated!
So, exhale, give yourselves a pat on the back, and get some sleep. The theatre community is a wondrous place. It's a loving, respectful, open-minded family who welcomes, supports, and embraces all. Thank you for your artistry, and I wish you all success on what is to come either tonight or with future projects as a result of the Fringe!
And a special note to Monica and all who work tirelessly at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, the Complex, and all of the other venues to make it all one grand party and success, we salute and thank you for all that it takes to put up this monster festival every year! CHEERS, everybody!
