Now how this is music to my ears.... waking to the sound of my family singing in the house .... I grew up singing with my family.... hearing aunts and uncles and my mom and dad and all combinations of folk practicing harmonies and working up new songs. My entire family is musical- I am certainly not the most talented. My grandmother passed music on and each generation has found their own song ever since ... we were not raised with money, but the land provided food for us and songs were our heirlooms. Rich indeed. As a mom I'm so proud my son gets to be around my family and their traditions.
I struggled for many years on the road when I was younger- homesick, isolated from Alaska me the land and people I knew. But I was honored because I had the opportunity to work hard to spread the dandelion seeds of song far across the world ... as a single mom, I wanted my son to learn from the land, how to be resilient like a hard wood tree, and to find and trust the rhythm of the tides and the weather - knowing the stormy days pass, and sunny days can't be taken for granted, and who we are doesn't change with the tide or the weather .... we are the deeply rooted tree watching it all in real time with all the right stuff to respond to whatever happens in life.
Having my family close helps me teach him that, because if there is one thing my family is- it's resilient, they have grit, and music lifts the soul. I'm so happy I get to tour with them and my son! My dad and brothers will open for me and tell stories and sing their own songs, and then also join me on stage during my show. For tickets go to jeweljk.com
