“Let’s go for a walk mommy, I want to see the sunset.” I jumped up and off we went. We ran to catch the sunset, me in my flip-flops, she in her sneakers, trying to chase it down. She walked ahead of me, ponytail bopping with each step she took, until she wanted to talk to me and let me catch up, grabbing my hand. She talked of school, traveling to faraway places, music we love, a house with a yard. “We missed it baby. We missed the sunset.” “It’s ok mommy. We can try another day. But look, there’s the moon. You know what I call it?” “No, but I am sure you are going to tell me,” I laughed. “I call it the Cheshire Moon. You want to know why? This time she didn’t wait for me to answer. “I call it the Cheshire Moon because it looks like the crazy cat from Alice in Wonderland.” I laughed and laughed. We are always going to have the Cheshire Moon even though I know moments like this are going to be less often as she grows older, and there will be one day, she won’t want to hold my hand. She won’t want to go chasing sunsets with her mommy, and I can’t think about that day just yet, because right now, we are chasing sunsets and if we don’t catch that one, we will catch another.
