RITUAL 4 //Touch others. But not to the point where you have harassed someone or disrespected them and you're now the cause of their #metoo campaign.
Part of our human experience on earth is to feel loved, wanted and accepted by others. If we don't get this love or acceptance our brains feel the pain of rejection, it responds not like you have an emotional pain but a physical pain like a broken bone.
Social exclusion or isolation also triggers the brain the same way as a physical pain. I've noticed this especially when working with trauma-survivors who often isolate and ruminate. Their physical pain threshold can b very high.
Relationships are important for happiness. We see tight communities/traditional families all living close to one another, constantly in contact all day every day. This is true especially for Mediterranean families, perhaps it's the physical closeness & contact, not just their diet. These type of communities live longer happier lives irrespective of their material possessions or financial ability.
How good does it feel to touch a furry animal or hold a baby? Hold hands with a loved one, share a kiss, make love? Give a long lingering squeeze to someone you care about 🤗 I LOVE to practice all of the above as much as I can. I'm very tactile. I just love touch. I will touch strangers (not discriminately! ), reassuringly, when it feels right mid conversation or with a handshake. It makes me feel good & I know in the RIGHT circumstance it makes them feel good too. NB please don't go around touching random strangers because you think it might make them feel good. That's not how to behave respectfully and it's breaking the law. Also, AWKWARD 😑
Why does it feel so good to be touched (by the right person)? Because... OXYTOCIN
This powerful hormone acts as a neurotransmitter to the brain which releases painkilling endorphins. It's known as the 'love hormone' and helps us form bonds. Exactly the reason lots of it is released when we hold a baby, hold hands, have sex, basically any type of touch like this is good for our brain and helps reduce physical pain.
Go hug, hold, touch and/or make love to someone you care about today and every day!
