Adieu 告別之前 (2018) - Hong Kong

Reviewed by Andrew Chan (Film Critics Circle of Australia)

One of the biggest issue with the well meaning and manufactured “tear-jerker” film about death, life end of journey and cancer is poor filmmaking techniques from the basics to handling strong dramatic scenes. Yes, there will be bound to be a few tears, but mostly forced out of the end of life situations than the developed storyline or plot. There is a lot of good things to say and end of life message the film tries extremely hard to portray, but none are developed thoroughly enough to justify the tears or the message. What we get instead are a number of star cameo appearances, making it seem like a lunar Chinese New Year, except this is a melodrama.
Louis Cheung plays the father of the cancer ridden child (played exceptionally well) and together with the ever improving Michelle Wai as the wife and mother shows the struggles and difficulty for a relationship as well as worrying about their child’s eventual fate. Helena Law Lan is always excellent in making the old lady facing impending death with a final wish of having dinner with her long forgotten daughter and son. Meanwhile, the third story goes to Jason Chan and Hedwig Tam showing the frustration and enormous sacrifices that goes with an infernal of emotions of caring for a cancer patient facing death. Gladys Li shows raw talent as the social worker in the midst.
All in all, Director Kenneth Lau is far too TV like in his approach and fails to make it into a cinematic affair. It should be noted that movies should portray a fuller and deep scope of characters that we will slowly grow and care for, however, too many cinematic shortcuts were taken and the result is clear, manufactured tears and not memorable ones.
I rated it 5.5/10

Tomorrow is Another Day 黃金花 (2017) - Hong Kong

Reviewed by Andrew Chan (Film Critics Circle of Australia)

Veteran actress Teresa Mo won the 2018 Hong Kong Film Awards, best actress for this film and rightly deserves the accords. Mental illness and autistic issues are given the focus for first time director Chan Tai Lee (credits include Ip Man films screenwriting) produces an ambitious and well meaning film even if it does goes a bit over the top towards the end. The underprivileged of Hong Kong are often hidden from society and normal daily lives, it’s the families that usually take it the hardest. Relationships are already difficult to build and maintain, it becomes harder as your child remains dependent on you for the rest of their lives. The stress, internal turmoil and everything that goes with dealing with the situations can destroy even the best of marriages, affairs and worst case of murder and deaths.
Teresa Mo is simply stunning to watch as she transform from ordinary middle aged mother buying fish in the wet market into a raging fume of jealousy as she comes to terms with her own husband’s infidelity and the internal demons of having to take care of their autistic child for life. It shows that if you put any one to go through the same situations can literally make the saneness insane. Ray Lui as the cheating father is done with a level of innocence and trying to put the stress as an excuse for his wrongdoing. Lui is suitably restrained and calm which makes the performance more convincing. Ling Man Lung does an admirably and believable job as the authentic son in the middle of everything involved. However, the main villain and home wrecker in the form of Bonnie Xian is a tad too one dimensional as we do not see both sides of the story.
All in all, Director Chan attempts to do too much and the 3rd act becomes more like a dream-like sequence rather than illusion of reality. Whilst the first 2/3 of the film remains extremely grounded and realistic both in storyline and acting wise. More can be dwell on particularly with Bonnie Xian and Ray Lui relationship which seems far too superficial than a worthy mistress relationship. Still, there is a lot to

走佬俏公主 The Princess Diaries (2001)
每逢有人問我最喜愛電影既時候,呢套一定榜上有名。
由細到大睇過不少於三十次,每年暑假都要重溫一次,大概可以推斷我係一個咩人Lol
輪盡搞笑、廸士尼式對女孩子既肯定、山雞變鳳凰、邊緣人變風頭躉、突然地有自信,加個大美女,小妹妹最受落,好似每個人都想頭獎,發現自己自命不凡🤗
Long story short, The Princess Diaries will always have a special place in my heart. Perspectives I see in this series have changed since I grow up. It is brimmed with cultural symbols to walk audience through an ugly duckling’s struggles to fit in and seek attention. The values and message are conventional and somewhat lame. But it is a brilliant story about self-affirmation as opposed to a rescue by Prince Charming.

The Leakers 洩密者們 (2018) - Hong Kong

Reviewed by Andrew Chan (Film Critics Circle of Australia)

Prolific director Herman Yau starts his 2018 with action investigative thriller in “The Leakers”. Largely filmed in Malaysia, the film is an interesting and though provoking that challenges the big pharmaceutical companies and comments on the wiki leaks in similar fashion. We get a similar trio cast from “Line Walker” with Julian Cheung, Francis Ng and Charmaine Sheh playing key roles. It goes to show how important an interesting and entertaining plot is as it’s light years ahead of their previous terrible effort in “Line Walker”. Charmaine Sheh produces one of her best on-screen cinematic performance as the passionate journalist that defy the odds to stay true to the art and integrity of journalism. Julian Cheung plays a groom to be and Malaysia Inspector who risks all to find the cause of the Zika virus. Francis Ng is excellent as the talkative persona in the mode of Hong Kong cop about to divorce. The rest of the cast is excellent, veteran Kent Cheng is menacing as main villain, Chrissie Chau shines in a small role and so does Michelle Wai as the supportive wife of Julian Cheung.
All in all, “The Leakers” works as a investigative thriller as it is ambitious in its plot, thinking and twists. It’s rare to see a Hong Kong film that doesn’t just play it safe and provide something different for the audience to think about. The wiki leaks style is fitting and the action scenes are extremely well staged and defined. The car chasing scenes remains a highlight. Sometimes, being ambitious is not enough, but this time, Herman Yau delivers once again in a highly efficient and effective manner.
