Celebrating handing in my first exam this semester. Of course the answer include both Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. My favourite, and yes I'm talking about them and the chocolate.

Today, on this historic day of April 19, 1775, the Battle of Lexington and Concord became the first military engagements and opening shots of the Revolutionary War and American Independence.
At five o”clock in the morning, just hours after Paul Revere’s warning. Seventy seven Lexington Militiamen led by French and Indian War veteran, Captain John Parker lined up on Lexington green and waited for the British Regulars to approach.
Upon the arrival of the British Regulars, a British officer rode towards the militiamen and shouted “Lay down your arms and disperse, you damned rebels”. Parker told his men to disperse and go home but hold fire. But someone fired the first shot at Lexington. No one knows who fired the first shot at Lexington, that’s why they called it “The shot heard round the world”. Eight militiamen were killed and the British only suffered one casualty.
At Concord, when the British continued to search for the Rebel supplies, four hundred militiamen engaged the one hundred British troops at the North Bridge at exactly 11:00 am. The British were under heavy fire the moment they returned to Boston and this led to the Siege of Boston which last almost a year until March 17, 1776.

Zouaves were the French Army styled uniforms worn by light infantry troops in French North Africa in the 1830s. In the American Civil War, a large number of Zouave regiments were being organized from US troops. Throughout the entire conflict, the Federal Union Army had more than seventy volunteer Zouave regiments. The Confederate Army had Zouaves as well but they were only companies and had less than the Union army.
These Zouave regiments were organized and inspired by Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, who was the first Union Army officer to be killed in the American Civil War. Colonel Ellsworth took command of a drill company in 1859 and called them the “Zouave Cadets” because he was inspired by his French friend Charles De Villers and he also obtained a Zouave drill manual. Then, he took command of the New York Zouave Fires in 1861.

The 18 pounder cannon was a most powerful artillery piece used during the battle of the Alamo in 1836. It was brought to Texas by the New Orleans Greys in early 1835. It was first used during the battle of Bexar before it was placed into the southwest corner of the Alamo fort. Today, only the cannon barrel is the only remain of the weapon at the Alamo.

Between 1834 and 1835, Stephen F. Austin traveled to Mexico City to make negotiations with Santa Anna about Mexican laws of Texas. Austin made demands for the removal of banning Americans settling in Mexican Texas.
He also asked Santa Anna to make Texas a separate state of Mexico. But when Santa Anna only answered one of the demands and this made Stephen F Austin write a letter to Texas for suggestions of Independence. When the letter was intercepted, Santa Anna arrested and imprisoned Austin and while he was in prison, Austin wrote a diary and sketch of the prison before he was released in September of 1835.

We're reading the History of Denmark for children by @sigurd_barrett and my daughter was told that her great grandfather helped Jews escape to Sweden during WWII. Her eyes just lit up, so we found a photo book about him. It's amazing how children can learn about history if we only make it easy to relate to. Another thing, we told her that Hitler disliked Jews and people of colour. Complete disbelief; "How can anyone not like another because of that?!" That's my girl

#otd in 1940 German forces invaded Denmark. King Christian X gave the order not to work against Germany. Over the years it has been discussed whether we as a nation;
A) just rolled over and handed the path to Sweden and Norway over to Hitler, or
B) if we were smart because Germany was much stronger than us.
As so many things in the world, it's a coin with two (maybe more) sides. But when analyzing history, it is crucial that we take off our present-day-hat, it', because things were different, politicians and the world were different. Don't judge based on what you know today, let the facts talk, they will tell you their story, and maybe both stories are correct dependent on the perspective. So no, history seldom has a definitive answer, but that's not a bad thing, that's real!

On this historic day of April 2, in the year of 1865, the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia was evacuated. When General Robert E. Lee’s defensive lines collapsed in the aftermath of the Siege of Petersburg. Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his entire cabinet immediately evacuated Richmond the moment they heard of Lee’s defeat at Petersburg. And fled south to Danville by railroad.

When Federal troops entered the Confederate capital, the entire city was left in ruins because outbreak of fires destroyed buildings and factories stockpiled with munitions caused the fires. The first troops that entered Richmond, were members of the United States Colored Troops.

Things are getting a little heated in 8th grade history class as we discuss the causes of the Civil War! #HISTORYISMYPASSION

Getting ready for a lecture on gender history today. Not my favorite topic. However, this is interesting. In 1886 a young girl was sentenced for stealing. Not unusual in itself. The fact that she had posed as male, made it unusual. At the time young working-class women weren't left with as many options when it came to earning money. Passing as a male was an alternative to prostitution. Personally, I think her very clever and brave. Her contemporaries not so much. The media covering the trial tended to focus on her cross-dressing rather than her stealing. I must admit I don't understand the need to defferentiate between us and them, as history often seem to do. It's history and some parts of it concerns some people more than others - or is more relatable to some. But why split it up? Doesn't that make the gap wider? No matter who the particular part how history concerns, I believe we can all learn from it. This story not only gives us a glue to women's history as its called, but also to the history of the English working-class in late 19th century, the law, family, rights, and so much more. Embrace it and learn from it
