"A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving."
Lao Tzu

The above quote is a good one to embrace when traveling by bus on the weekends in Porto. .
During the week things run pretty smoothly. But on the weekends there are fewer buses scheduled and some of the lines stop running altogether.

The #500 double-decker bus is popular with tourists. It runs from the city center along the Douro river to the ocean. At certain times the bus gets so crowded the driver doesn't stop for any more passengers. This is a sad moment because the weekend wait for another bus is long, especially when the traffic is bad.

The Saturday I took this photo I was meeting a friend in the city. I was intent on arriving, so when the bus stopped to let a few people off I crammed myself into the last free space. .
I had to stand right up against the front windshield - further forward then the driver - not the safest place to be. The ten minute ride took forty minutes because of the traffic. .
But I did arrive.

Today I went to the feira de produtos biológicos do Porto, an organic farmers market held on Saturday mornings in the Parque da Cidade.
.
The market is small with about a dozen booth set up under grapevines in what looks like an old stone farmhouse courtyard. The quality of the produce is higher, more extensive and less expensive then it is in the few small health food stores in Porto.
.
I bought as much as I could carry through the park back to the bus stop. My bags were heavy with fruit and vegetables, but my heart was light and excited about my bounty.
.
I smiled the whole way home...

"There are so many things a tree could do: add color, provide shade, drop fruit, or become a children's playground, a whole sky universe to climb and hang from; an architecture of food and pleasure, that was a tree. But most of all the trees would distill an icy air for the lungs, and a gentle rustling for the ear when you lay nights in your snowy bed and were gentled to sleep by the sound."

Someone wrote the word "forever" at the end of the dock at Harrison Lake. But the chains holding the dock in place can only promise "now."

The much needed rain has arrived in Porto. Both jetties in Foz do Douro were blocked off with police tape this morning. .
It must've been a wild night with the waves crashing over the jetty. From the sand piled up by the sidewalk it looked like the waves almost reached the road. .
There's more rain forecast for today and tomorrow. Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain. 💦💦💦

On my morning walk I didn't see this duck on the walkway and nearly tripped over it. When it still didn't move I wondered if it was real or a decoy. Even when I bent down to take a closer look the duck stared off into the distance.
.
Sometimes things in life are like this duck. They get in our way and sometimes we trip. Sometimes we stop to take a closer look. And sometimes we simply walk around the decoy that is trying to block our intended course.
.
The word decoy used as a verb comes from the Middle Dutch word "de kouw," meaning "the cage."
.
So when a big fat duck blocks your path don't be lured into the cage. Walk around all the decoys, the things that look real and try to trip you up, and stay focused on your journey."

For centuries the flat-bottomed Rabelo boat transported wine barrels and people between the Douro valley where port wine is produced, and the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, where it was traded from the wine cellars and exported worldwide.
.
Before 1968 there was no damn on the Douro river and the water was often shallow, fast flowing and treacherous.
Still the Rabelo boats were the most efficient mode of transportation before there were suitable roads and a railway.
.
The boats were pulled back up to the vineyards with the empty port barrels by animals or human pullers using towpaths along the river banks.
.
Nowadays large replicas of the Rabelo boat transport hordes of turbulent tourists up and down the tranquil Douro river for an hour, a day, or a week.

I love Japanese food. I finally made it the Namban Oporto Kitchen Café, Japanese restaurant run by a young couple.
.
It's located inside the Galerias Lumére shopping area. The cafe has no seating inside its tiny space, but there's a common space in the center of the mall where tables and chairs are set up.
.
I arrived early and was told by the owner that they don't start serving until 1 o'clock. I went back at one and stood by the door ready to order my vegetable curry. But the owner came out and explained that he had forgotten to tell me that they only serve a certain number of meals at lunch and that if I wanted lunch there that day I would have to wait about 45 minutes to be served since they were already seven orders ahead of me.
.
"What you need to do in the future is call me at 10 o'clock and order your meal. The menu changes every day. Then I will call you back when my partner starts to cook the meal. She only cooks four servings at a time. After I call you wait another 10 minutes or so and then come to the cafe and your meal will be ready."
.
This all sounded very complicated to me. And a bit torturous since the smells coming out of the kitchen were delectable.
.
I went to the café next-door and had a quiche and salad. I left about 45 minutes later and still hadn't seen any food come out of the Japanese restaurant.
.
I will go back though, on a day I'm feeling more Zen like, because the photos of the food on the Internet look amazing. And I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
