Consider that your hips are your feet and your feet are your hips. They're actually connected physically, relating to each other all the time and like any relationship in our lives, a good one requires attention, compassion & action.

Our hips are a beautiful and complex expression of the human form. There is a multitude of potentials that the joint itself can perform and yet we so very often don't use them. It's a modern human thing I guess - a perfectly evolved form, but we're more likely choose to disconnect and de-evolve. I feel that we're just not taught a whole-body connected perspective let alone something as specific as the relationship b/t feet and hips.

Looking at the squat for example...
Opening the feet allows the hip to gain more contact with the ground. Sounds strange right?! But it's simple body mechanics. When the foot spreads out into the ground appropriately (space b/t the toes and the countless other joints involved) the force production that is created up at the belly/hip/spine (kua) is easily pressed against the ground - centralising joints up the chain for positioning and performance.

Inversely if the feet are tight, closed and non responsive, (that includes when they're treated as separate, not even seen as a part of the whole) the hips/belly/spine have no footing. They're still holding the same force production potentials however, there is nothing for them to press, hold onto or manipulate against. Instead, that force goes wherever it can, often into other joints, forward or lateral movement paths as a form of energy dissipation.

Imagine firing a canon from a canoe? Bit of a mess yeah?! Well, integrating the relationship b/t your hips and your feet will be, in time, like placing that canon on solid ground before firing.
