Backpacked from trailhead of Kirk Creek campground (~100 feet elevation) on Highway 1, for 5 miles to the Vicente Flat campground, a back country camp site. We dropped our packs there after a long hard hike, and being exposed under the sun, we pitched our tents, made our dinner slept at 8pm and woke up at 2:30am and start to summit Cone Peak around 3:30 for another 6.5miles hike. Total hiking distance one-way from Highway 1 is 11.5 miles, 23miles total out and back. Moving time of 18hrs... 10L of water! I couldn’t believe I drank them all within that span. It’s super dry and hot out there! Cone Peak is a mountain of marble that has been sculpted by erosion to it’s present steepness, it is the most spectacular coastal mountain in the Lower 48 States. At 5,155' high and it’s the highest Peak of Big Sur!
In this picture, it says 1/4 mile to the summit. The summit is behind me, the very tip of that mountain. They call it Cone Peak and that’s a butt kicker! That was the longest 1/4 mile of my life! But glad we made it! Another peak in the BAG! 😎
