This fluffy bear is the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus)! A subspecies of Sloth Bear, it is found in the drive forests of Sri Lanka, just southeast of India. It is an omnivorous species, but most of the meat it eats is carrion. The subspecies has no official IUCN status but is considered highly endangered due to their being less than 1,000 of these bears left in the wild. The primary threat they face is loss of habitat and population decrease, this subspecies could possibly be extinct by 2050. Sloth bears in general have an SSP, Species Survival Plan, under the @zoos_aquariums .You can see this unique subspecies at places such as @lowryparkzoo and more.

4.5-year-old Ticuna is doing swimmingly well after what is believed to be a first time ever double #rootcanal on a #giantriverotter. The #highlyendangered 50-pound #otter had broken both of her upper canines, exposing the pulp and creating what was certainly severe pain. This is something that these animals will sometimes do in the wild while chewing on mollusks, bony fish, and other hard substances. Unfortunately, in the wild, such injuries often prevent the animal from being able to eat properly and can lead to death. Thankfully, due to careful observations by the animal science staff, Ticuna’s injury was able to be attended to by a full veterinary dental team, led by Dr. Jan Bellows of All Pets Dental, along with Dr. Elizabeth McMorran and veterinary dental assistant, Joana Macias. The team was assisted by Zoo Miami’s veterinary team, led by Dr. Gaby Flacke. Dr. Bellows and Dr. McMorran each worked on a separate canine simultaneously to reduce the amount of time the animal would have to be under anesthesia. Both root canals were performed successfully without incident and Ticuna now appears to be fully recovered back at her habitat in Zoo Miami’s Amazon and Beyond exhibit. She should be ready to greet visitors when the zoo re-opens on October 14th! #otterofinstagram #otterlyamazing #wildanimal #zooanimal #zoo #zoomiami #foundinmiami #miami #miamiflorida

Snow Leopard's tail is very thick due to storage of fat and is thickly covered with fur. It is long and flexible which helps to maintain balance in the steep and rocky terrain they inhabit. #AmazingNature #Theyhaverights #Theyhavefeelings #SpeakForAnimals #BornToBeWild #HighlyEndangered
