Guess who came back? Penny!! We can hardly believe it!
Early this morning, Guy Human woke me up to ask about a lone chicken in the yard. All the others were still safely locked in the coop. (I delayed the automatic door to 7am due to our coyote problem.) When I looked out, my first thought was that it kind of looked like Penny, but then when I didn’t see Hendrea in her box in her corner of the house, I freaked out a little bit and wondered how she got out. Once we stepped outside, I realized it WAS Penny! (Hendrea was pacing around the house.)
I grabbed Penny, kissed and hugged her, and then locked her in a kennel for a few hours since she seemed broody. Around noon, we let her out and followed her around until we discovered her secret nest.
OMG. Her secret nest was behind some brush next to a tree in the middle of our back hill. It was located right between where a coyote had dropped Lennox back in February, and where another coyote had eaten Over Eazy E. AND during our absence, our neighbor had seen coyotes traipsing in our yard, and when we returned, we saw a coyote lurking as well. How she managed to stay hidden and how a coyote did not sniff her out is beyond amazing. It’s baffling! She was hiding for at least 7-10 days!!
She’s currently in broody jail right now, along with Effie Trinkett and Olive. In other news, we also found another secret nest of hidden eggs. In the last pic, the left dark ones are Penny’s secret clutch, minus 2-3 broken ones we left in the nest. The eggs on the right were found in the other secret nest.
