The raw food bandwagon....much like the low carb, paleo, intermittent fasting, 5:2 bandwagons you don't HAVE to jump on.

Are these well-marketed, heavily-hyped 'diets' or 'ideas' necessary for healthy living.....Why eliminate or restrict foods you enjoy when you really don't have to?

Dynamic Reformer Pilates.....what does that even mean?

Our pioneering interpretation and use of the Reformer machine is less holistic, less traditional and not a 'purist' form of the discipline. We were the first Dynamic Reformer studio of our kind when we opened in Mt. Maunganui in 2011 and our Dynamic approach was and is different from what was already out there.
However, all the original fundamental teachings of Pilates are present; we teach spine, pelvic and shoulder awareness and positioning. We focus on the breath, the tempo of movement and the need to develop core strength in it's truest sense - the ability to transfer and manage (resist or initiate) force and load from the limbs without compensations in the spine, hips or shoulders.

Once you have all that we then push you through hard, total body sessions that force physiological change in your strength, condition, flexibility and well-being......plus you're look leaner and fitter than ever.

We are tactile, we will get our hands on you and position you the way we want you in any given movement under any given load. You will know whether what you are doing is correct or not, it won't be left to chance, we will watch you closely.

You will be safe and looked after but you will be pushed. It will genuinely be like a workout like none you've had before.

It's not rocket science.

If you want to 'significantly reduce' your chances of getting breast cancer, colon cancer, diabetes, ischemic heart disease (coronary artery), and ischemic stroke events then you need to move more. Not just move enough to satisfy current health organisation recommended levels of weekly activity but 'several times higher' than that. Follow this link to find out exactly what the World Health Organisations minimum activity levels are for adults globally and see how you stack up:

http://www.who.int/dietphysicalactivity/factsheet_adults/en/

So it's going to require some effort, some discomfort and more than a little discipline.

Have you started yet?

It's all very well being mobile, it's all very well being strong....but you need BOTH......great range of motion is useless if you do not have the strength to CONTROL that range of motion. Equally, great strength is irrelevant if you are stiff and immobile.

Strength AND mobility are synergistic and one should not be compromised for the other.

The 7am class in Mt. Maunagnui demonstrating an excellent example of this; great range of motion at the hips but with full control.

Again, just the facts; evidenced-based, scientific research should ideally be your source for dietary advice - not a Netflix documentary. You may end up demonising something that may be actually quite good for you.

Know and trust your sources, be mindful of prejudice and agenda of the authors of those sources and be prepared to be wrong. We often are.

In terms of fat loss only (regardless of 'optimal health') you can and will lose fat eating whatever food you want PROVIDED you are in a calorie deficit.

1200kcals of fries will see you burn fat provided your daily calorie requirement is above 1200kcal.

IDEALLY you want to lose fat and retain optimal health...this is where calorie or food quality does matter. 1200kcal of lean protein and vegetables will see you lose the fat without compromising health (performance, skin, hair, hormonal balance etc.). Quantity AND quality.

This is what (this particular) Personal Trainer eats during a typical work and training day:

Thursday 2nd November 2017
Milk, whole - 2 cups
Pics Peanut Butter - 60g
Banana, raw - 2 Medium
Blueberries, frozen - 2 cups
Whey Protein - 3 scoops
Coffee - 4 cups
Egg, whole, cooked, scrambled - 3 medium eggs
Bread, toasted - 1 slice
Spinach, cooked - 1 cup
Salmon, cooked - 350g
Rice, brown, cooked, instant - 1 cup
Broccoli, cooked - 1 cup
Carrots, cooked 2 2.5cups
Olive oil - 2.5 tablespoons
Peas, green, cooked - 0.5 cup
Onions, mature, cooked - 0.5 cup
Beer - 2 bottles
Yoplus Low Fat Yogurt - 2 cups
Cheese, natural, Cheddar or American type - 60g
Weetabix Whole Wheat Cereal - 5 biscuits

This comes in at about 3800kcal with a rough macro nutrient split of 30% fat, 35% carb and 30% protein. This may seem like a lot BUT it's so important to remember the output that any given day requires. On this day I woke at 5am with first session at 6am and subsequent sessions taking me to lunchtime. An early afternoon heavy strength gym session was followed by more clients and classes until a 7pm finish.
So, it's a long day of being active and on your feet hence the need for a high calorie intake. I wouldn't necessarily want or need this much food if I sat at a desk for 8 hours REGARDLESS of whether I still went to the gym or not; the majority of your daily calorie burn is from NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) not from what you do during your one hour of exercise.

Range of Motion,
Activation &
Movement
Preparation.

A phrase coined by renowned fat loss coach Alwyn Cosgrove, it perfectly describes the 'warm up' section of your class. We us the combination of a leg press, a hamstring/calf stretch, core stabilisation and postural awareness to prepare you for the work that's about to come.

As always, focus hard on your RAMP and treat it as seriously as your lunges, squats, pushes and presses.

'Working with a personal trainer will make you fitter, stronger and increase your lean body mass more effectively than working out in an exercise facility or club on your own'. - The New Zealand Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

It might seem somewhat of an obvious statement. You would safely assume that paying a Personal Trainer to train you privately will improve your results dramatically and it's true.

However there has been little research into whether one to one training does actually improve your results. A 2014 study in California is one of the only pieces of research that have been conducted into the subject. The study demonstrated for the first time in a fitness club setting that: 'Members whose training is directed by well-qualified PT's administering evidence-based training regimens achieve significantly greater improvements in lean body mass and other dimensions of fitness than members who direct their own training'

Most of you have probably never worked with a PT for a variety of reason's, the foremost reason usually being the cost associated with hiring your own trainer.
Our small group classes are essentially semi-private Personal Training without the associated cost. You get a dedicated, hands-on trainer who has the ability to adapt group sessions to a variety of strength, fitness and conditioning levels.

If you're not sure about a PT, come in and give a class a go.

Gripping the mat or floor in a vain attempt to gain stability; this is indicative of lack of glute engagement and over time can lead to plantar fasciitis....you know, that sore arch you have or those crampy calves you keep getting?

Had to post this....I've just been listening to Mike Hosking (forgive me) extolling the fat loss virtues of 'bulletproof coffee' on his breakfast show. Some of you will know that this is black coffee with a lump of butter and oil (usually coconut) added to create a high-calorie, high-fat, energy boosting caffeine-laden miracle juice.

Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with butter or indeed saturated fat.

There is nothing wrong with coconut oil (or any other oil)....people think coconut oil is a fat loss miracle because it's a medium chain triglyceride and more absorbable through the portal vein as a result and blah blah.... In terms of fat loss, NONE OF THIS MATTERS.

Hosking claimed (not 10 minutes ago) that a 500kcal bulletproof coffee will get rid of your 'muffin top'. The only thing that will get rid of your muffin top is a calorie deficit.

So....if you need 2200kcal per day to MAINTAIN current weight and the 500kcal from your bulletproof coffee is part of this then you WON'T LOSE YOUR MUFFIN TOP.

If you require the same 2200kcal per day to maintiain your weight but you are only eating 1900kcal (including 500kcal from your bulletproof coffee if you wanted) then YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MUFFIN TOP.

So....if you are in calorie deficit and like bulletproof coffee then drink it and you'll lose fat. If you prefer Vegemite and toast and it keeps you below your 2200kcal then eat that instead AND YOU WILL STILL LOSE FAT. If you are at or over your daily calorie need then you won't lose fat whether you drink the coffee or eat the toast.

Adherence = Success.

Most exercise programmes will work if you actually stick to them. Adherence, not the programme content, will define your success and goal completion

We help our clients plan, prepare and execute their training and nutrition programmes consistently i.e. strategies that they can adhere to.

There is nothing magical about ANY exercise programme (no matter how slick the marketing is), it will work if someone sticks to it.

Unless you are training SPECIFICALLY for hypertrophy (muscle growth) or you're a competition body builder/fitness competitor then you should ideally focus on multi-planar movements as opposed to specific muscles.

That said....if your training frequency is high (5-7 days of resistance training each week) then you may well benefit from training muscle groups e.g chest/triceps, back/biceps etc. This will serve to offset the potential overtraining effects of such high volume exercising.

GENERALLY, most of you have the time and inclination to train 2-4 times per week maximum. This is where multi-planar, movement pattern based resistance training is fundamental.

Here, Reform Mt. Eden PT client (and National sprint athlete) Symone performs a horizontal anterior push movement (chest press) paired with resisted hip abduction (ring stretches). The chest press is in the saggital plane (front to back movement) and the abduction is in the frontal plane (left to right movement). Don't blindly train like someone who has entirely different training goals than you, let us help you.....come to a class.
