How's this for some fun!
I love how Movement can be so much fun and make me feel like a child again.
Movement needs to be fun. It needs to be enjoyable, not only so we are consistent, but so we allow our body to move through movement in a way that reflects joy, happiness and freedom.
Continuing to move in a way that we don't enjoy or focusing on negatives during movement increases our stress, that we really need and want to decrease.
Finding the right movement for you is the most vital part of the process.
Finding what is right for you in every way is vitally important for the ease of our growth and evolution.

Find joy, find fun, play in anything.

Consistency breeds success.

The graph below represents the body composition changes one of our clients has experienced during a 12 week period.

This client trains consistently and hard 3-4 times per week utilising a combination of one to one PT sessions and classes. The client also follows the guidelines set out in one of our nutrition programmes.

There is no magic formula here. The client trains hard but not to excess, eats well but does not deprive and as a result has cut fat weight, fat percentage and changed body shape while increasing lean muscle and improving strength and conditioning.

Twelve weeks is a short time period to drop almost 4.5 percent body fat, lose over 3kg of pure fat and gain over 2kg of new, metabolically active, lean muscle. It was not an overnight fad diet, it is not a time-consuming, excessive training regime. It’s a manageable lifestyle adaptation which means the fat stays off, the muscle stays on and it can be realistically followed. Forever.

Ask us about our range of nutrition programming, Personal Training and programme design.

Long and Lean.

It's somewhat of a misnomer; muscles don't change their actual length rather they are never worked or stretched to that full length in the first place. You always have the potential to 'lengthen' your muscles but this increase in length is because you are working through a greater range of motion than before. The actual tissue itself is a constant, it's your ability to mobilise it through it's maximum range that gives the perception and/or appearance of lengthening.

To be lean get strong. Reduce body fat and work with and against challenging resistance (springs, dumbells, body weight).

Fruit.

Eat it. Don't fall into the insulin zealot's trap of thinking that eating fruit will cause all sorts of blood sugar spikes and cause you to get fat and blah blah blah.... Fruit is full of fibre, nutrients and is low calorie. Eat it as much as you want; yes, you should base snacking (and all eating) around some protein but fruit is delicious and nutritious and you shouldn't be afraid of it.

There is no evil insulin fairy; yes, immediately after eating, insulin is released ('spike' if you insist) and tells the body to stop burning it's fat stores and instead, absorb some of the fatty acids and glucose (from the broken down food) in the blood and turn them into more body fat.

So in this regard, it does make you fat.

But.

Once the body has finished absorbing the glucose and other nutrients from the just-eaten meal, it then enters the “postabsorptive” state (“after absorption”), wherein it must turn to its fat stores for energy. This “fasted” state is when the body is in “fat burning mode.” Your body flips between “fed” and “fasted” states every day, storing fat from food you eat (fed), and then burning it once there’s nothing left to use from the meals (fasted). So long as the fed and fasted states remain similar throughout the day your weight will remain the same. Think about the 8-10 hours overnight when you don't eat: your body is feeding itself by breaking down and burning your stored fat. No insulin influence at all.

This is the fundamental mechanism underlying fat storage and fat loss and it takes precedence over anything related to insulin or any other hormones in the body.

Calories in must equal calories out to maintain body weight and as long as this is the case all the fruit and insulin 'spikes' in the world won't make a difference.

Head position is critical.

Wherever your head goes, your torso will follow. 'Tuck the chin and create and keep a double chin' - this is one of my favourite cue's as unaesthetic as it may feel or seem. Forward head migration under load is needs to be a focal point as does head movement and position in general.

So, macro's.

As a follow up to our post the other day about calculating calorie intake (and manipulating it for fat loss) we need to touch upon macro nutrients or macro's.

Macro's are carbs, protein and fat and are the sources of your calories; many, many factors come in to play when establishing the optimal ratio of carbs, protein and fats. GENERALLY, if you are regularly training the one macro you need to set before all others is protein (for a billion reasons we've discussed before). Set it high, at least 40% (if not more) and split the remaining calories in your daily allowance between carbs and fat.
The example here is a 40/30/30 protein, carb & fat split and (depending on your 'tolerance' of carbs) is a good place to start.

This is all purely from a fat loss training goal perspective: not necessarily optimal performance and so on. It is general advice for a broad demographic, individual requirements will vary.

Do the maths, plug your daily diet into a calorie tracking website like fitday.com and start your (healthy) fat loss journey today.

Squat to a depth where you can maintain a similar angle at the ankle and hip (shin and torso)....don't force depth (particularly under load) that either structural (joint restriction), soft tissue inhibition or previous injury/pain does not allow.
