Don’t try to make the number on the scale go down: make your workout numbers go UP - Nia Shanks.

Forget about trying to weigh less and eat less – focus on making other numbers go UP. Add more weight to your carriage, use the next set of dumbbells UP. Perform your reps more slowly than you did last time sending time under tension UP. Perform a more challenging exercise variation, take the yellow spring off sending intensity UP.

A warm welcome to Sam and Richard, Reform's newest trainers based at our Mt Maunganui studio.

After working in the marine industry for years Sam decided he needed a career change and retrained with the NZ Institute of Health and Fitness, where he gained certification as a Fitness Consultant and a Personal Trainer. Sam has years of personal fitness experience under his belt in gyms and in different forms of exercise such as boxing, cycling and yoga. Sam has successfully completed his training through the Reform Academy.

Richard has always had a keen interest in the fitness, exercise and wellbeing scene and decided to retrain through the New Zealand Institute of Health and Fitness to become a certified Fitness Consultant and Personal Trainer and to turn his passion into a career. He has spent some time in the CrossFit arena with a specific focus on Olympic Lifting and has spent the past six years training with NZ athletes in this area focusing on flexibility, mobility and form. Richard has successfully trained through the Reform Academy.

Many would argue the fundamental purpose of the core musculature is to prevent movement, to create stiffness to manage transfer of forces generated from the limbs, shoulders and hips.

Too much push, not enough pull.... Generally, we live our lives in such a way that sees us develop an imbalance between our anterior 'push' strength and our posterior 'pull' strength. The way we sit, stand and carry ourselves as well as the traditional way we exercise, can create a strength deficit between the front and back of your body.
Picture the bloke in your gym who just does bench press, the girl hunched at her desk typing all day or that person who 'just does abs'. This push work can and must be offset will pull work. In very generic terms lengthening and weakening of the posterior is a net result of shortening and strengthening of the anterior and show itself in rounded shoulders, chins that jut forward and spines that excessively curve.

Our Dynamic Reformer Pilates classes work your body in a balanced fashion. When you find yourself performing an anterior focused sequence in a class it will generally be complimented at some stage by an equivalent posterior sequence. This 1:1 ratio is always roughly adhered too; however, for some of us this ratio needs to be switched to 2:1 or even 3:1 to offset the ravages of years of bad posture or poorly programmed training. In this picture, Reform Ambassador Julea demonstrates the versatility of the Pilates Allegro Reformer and how we use it to challenge your 'pull' strength. Julea is performing a pull-down, targeting the lats, middle/lower traps, and biceps. This is a vertical pull movement and works in symmetry with other 'pull' work such as the dumbbell row, a horizontal pull movement, to strengthen the posterior.
