Have you ever used a Hex bar?
🤔🤓 Not much of a different between hex bar and straight bar other than pulling with a neutral grip, shin contact and muscle recruitment is a bit different.
Muscles worked are... Quads / Glutes / erector spinae(muscles along spine) / and hip adductor muscles

Let's use @michael_boyle1959's naming convention for deadlifts: If the weight is hanging in your hands, it's a deadlift.
.
Deadlifts typically happen as hinge movements, with lots of hip flexion, mostly straight legs, and a vertical tibia or shin.
.
If you read @chweingroff's blog 10 years ago you'll LOVE this part!
.
A conventional barbell deadlift blocks your knees from moving forward, which reinforces that vertical tibia of a stricter hinge.
.
Because the hex bar allows for room in front of your knees, it's easier to reposition the hips and knees in space.
.
At @mffclubhouse we find the middle position most of the time, and it's important to find the nuance between a vertical shin, "hinge" deadlift, and an angled shin, "squat" deadlift.
.
Last week @nps109 spent some time exploring what these felt like, and discovered that if he thought about a squat, he could consistently find that middle position and was primed for a strong pull.
.
Today, @bshulbanksmith told me the same thing! These are two examples of some general clarity I'd like to provide about using this bar:
.
1) Lifting weights is a lot better than debating how to lift weights without actually doing it.
.
2) It's possible to make a hex bar deadlift a very obvious hinge, but also much closer to a squat than a barbell deadlifts.
.
3) Taking the time to "try on" a movement can be an important learning experience. Ultimately, we're finding what feels the most comfortable for our unique bodies.
.
4) This doesn't mean that a specific hip position is right or wrong, but just different. If I had to choose, I'd pick this middle position for the vast majority of people.
.
5) If you want to train with straighter legs, switch to a barbell deadlift. If you want even more leg bend, switch to a squat. Let the hex bar deadlift live in between these two movement patterns!

In the words of my orthopedic doctor, my hip mobility really sucks. This makes lifting seriously challenging for me. But the hex bar has been really helpful!! My form is getting better. My back is straighter. Even resisted (which killed me a little bit) I was able to keep my form in check! Deadlifts are always so hard for me because in my head I completely suck at them. Really though, it's not that bad. Also, it's not that I'm not strong enough or good enough. My hips just physically will not go low enough, like I literally cannot force them. How can I beat myself up over something my body refuses to do?? It's going to be a slow process to get my hips right. I'm going to have to be really patient. But I want to be better, so I'll do what it takes.

So sometimes you have to be a little creative with training. So thanks to @the_wright_fitness I now have a favourite row variation, using the hex/trap bar really activated the widest parts of my lats and can get a good contraction under control with almost no bicep involvement.

Hexbar deads 5,4,3,2,1 and then an amrap of 17 at #275. First set my hips are off and I look like an awkward frog, but was able to set them better by the end. High bar pauses at #185 that felt a little uncomfortable too. @bradly_bechel_110kg @massjunkiee @rampagepowerlifting .

Weight down 1.5 kg. Heavy strapping on the hands today and used my lifting straps for some heavy hex bar deadlifts. Not deadlifted since fucking up my hands at Xmas so it was great to get that movement going again 5 x5 at 177kg and 3x3 at 217kg (shown) I'm gonna stick to the hex bar for a few weeks rather than jump straight back into the conventional pulls until I am completely pain free and don't need strapping and ibuprofen. I learned after exclusively doing hexbar for years, that switching to a deadlift proper=HAMSTRINGS!
I knew hexbar is more quad-centric (which is why I do them to protect my back), but I now see I neglected building my hamstrings.
I now ensure to work hamstrings after hexbar, the same as I warm up quads before/after a deadlift...
