ATTENTION HEREFORD COMMUNITY
This is very important and all support is necessary. Yesterday afternoon, Hereford High students performed a one act play at the Northeast Theatre Fest. The show was Clowns with Guns by by Christopher Evans, a satire highlighting how American youth have become numb to the impact of school shootings. Lockdowns have become just another opportunity for students to take a break and pull out their phones during the school day.
Despite choosing the show months in advance and rehearsing well before the devastating occurrence in Parkland, Hereford students were met by rioting and threats. Nonetheless, students were proud to have sparked talk. A group discussion was held afterwords for actors and audience members to explain their feelings toward such a performance. I can personally say that the hatred I received was rooted in a deeper fear of feeling unsafe and that the uproar is exactly what Evans would have wanted.
HERE IS WHERE YOU COME IN
Letters from upset students and parents have swarmed the school board demanding for Mr. Rose to be fired. It is important to note that not a single one of these letters was from a member of the Hereford Community. Mrs. Michele Guyton has suggested the best possible way to fight this is for the Hereford Community to write letters of their own in support of Mr. Rose and the show.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO HIT ON
1. How Mr. Rose has supported you and/or had a positive impact on your life.
2. How the show personally effected you and your opinion of the intent of the show.
3. Mr. Rose's intent behind the show.
4. How the timing of the show WAS appropriate. (There will never be a good time to discuss gun violence and until children aren't being murdered, there is no better time than now to open up the dialogue). PLEASE BRING ALL LETTERS TO MR. JIRA'S MAILBOX TUESDAY MORNING OR TO ME AND I WILL DELIVER MYSELF. FEEL FREE TO DM ME YOUR LETTER AND I WILL PRINT/DELIVER FOR YOU.
