We snapped this shot a couple of years ago in Herat’s Great Mosque. It’s a stunning structure which dates back more than 800 years in parts. A huge restoration effort is currently underway to replace some of the mosques colourful tiles which belong to the Timurid times of the 15th century – a golden period for art and architecture in Afghanistan. Although we like to focus on the positive sides of Afghanistan in our posts - there are some things we can't just ignore. Over the past couple of years a number of Shia mosques, shrines and cultural centers have been targeted by ISIS. There is concern that these deadly attacks may lead to increasing sectarian violence in the country - one of the few horrors Afghanistan had been largely spared from in this war. We can only hope 2018 will see end to this worrying trend.
