☄️ Outliers and American Vanguard is an incredible collection of rarely exhibited masterpieces, a show that’s gloriously reflective and pridefully inclusive to race, status and gender- the show examines the idea of ART and the key to an artists success: an examination of value, drive and luck. It answers the statement that most people have when looking at a Warhol- one I have heard a million times- where the viewer says “I could do that” but truth is - like Warhol one has to claim it as art, of course anyone with skill could paint a soup can but without the idea and follow up of stating this is ART along with devoting your life to being an artist- work is only seen as craft or hobby.
Most of the people in this show had “jobs” and lived in areas without art scenes, opportunities or enthusiasts or they simply took another path like Henry Darger who was a custodian in a hospital. Darger today is one of the most famous figures in the history of outsider art, and deservingly so with mind blowing work. Take notice of his interest in gender, he often painted girls with penises and on closer inspection they seem to have penises only when at war with adults. Until I see something in person it has no lasting impact, now that I have witnessed Dargers work I’m obsessed with him. I hope this happens with new viewers to Greer’s work as well. There is a grand suite of her work: watercolors, photographs and dolls- a good dose, and a easy path to obsession.
Cosmically Greer shares the room with Lee Godie another Chicagoan. Lee was homeless, a bit insane, and a inspiration to Greer who had several run ins with Godie when Greer attended The Chicago Art institute as a teenager. #greerlankton #henrydarger #lynnecooke #leegodie
