It is the last few days to visit the Robert Capa retrospective at Shenzhen University Art Museum in China, supported by @dakenart.
The career spanning-exhibition shows a selection of Capa’s photographs from World War II as well as many portraits, including those of his friends and contemporaries, such as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

You can visit the exhibition before it ends on Friday September 15.

Henri Matisse, Portrait of Madame Matisse, 1905, oil on canvas, 41 x 33 cm, Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.
This depiction of the artist’s wife, Amélie, is one of Henri Matisse’s most famous paintings and a masterpiece within 20th century portraiture. It is also known as The Green Stripe or The Green Line. The painting was presumably painted in the autumn of 1905, when Matisse had returned to Paris after spending a summer in the fishing village of Collioure. Here, he and André Derain engaged in ever-wilder painterly experiments intended to release colour from its descriptive function, allowing it to act as a force in its own right. With its unorthodox use of colour, the painting is built on those experiments. Much of its strength resides in its simple geometric structure and in the way in which the colours are combined. Spatial modulation is pared back to a minimum. Effects of light and shadow, which would have added depth to the image, have been translated into planes of colour instead. The highly visible brush strokes add to the sense of artistic drama. The famous green stripe down the center of Amélie Matisse's face acts as an artificial shadow line and divides the face in the conventional portraiture style, with a light and a dark side.

#HenriMatisse painted “The dinner table” in 1897 and and he re-elaborated it in 1908 creating “The Dessert: Harmony in Red”, eleven years later the first one. By watching the two artworks closely we can see a lot of analogies but also many differences. Which is your favourite?😍🎨 •

Many critics consider this to be Matisse's most innovative period. He had begun to experience severe arthritis and could no longer stand to paint. He started creating paintings with scissors by cutting pieces of colorful paper and gluing them onto larger pieces of paper with the help of his assistants. They were called « gouaches découpées » (cutouts).

Daily Dose of Artists' Quotes:
Henri Matisse

Matisse's Venetian chair. Matisse was enchanted by this elegant silver gilt chair, and wrote to his friend Louis Aragon (Surrealist poet) in 1942:
"I have at last found the object for which I've been longing for a whole year. It's a Venetian baroque chair...It's splendid. I'm obsessed with it."
I am quite obsessed with it too - that and the silver chocolate pot.
