Wolf's heart (2017) is the first solo album by Henrik Berggren, who was the singer of a swedish band called Broder Daniel in the late 90s. From what I understand, Broder Daniel was quite popular in Sweden at the time, loads of hysterical fans and all that.
The Broder Daniel records that I have heard are excellent, but I don't know what to think about this Berggrens solo effort. First songs are catchy and damn good. Especially the very first one called "Hold on to your dreams" is an instant classic, even though when it is playing I find myself always wondering if it really is an Blue Öyster Cult song.. From there on the songs get sadder and sadder, and the last half of the record goes to so deppressive and unfortunately dull places, that I rarely have the strength to listen it through.
Where does all that sadness come from? Of course I don't know, but I can guess. I feel like this whole record is kind of an explanation to the question about what happened to Berggren after the glory days of Broder Daniel.
The first songs represent the time, when life was a party, and everything was going great. The following songs tell about the situation when the party is over, but one doesn't know how to stop partying. The dull shit at the end represents the inevitable years of deppression, that are the result of everything that was before them.
If Berggren is talking about his own life in this record, he does it in a very honest, selfironic and heartfelt way. There is some tragicomical but in its own way brilliant stuff here, like the following sample from the song "Wild child": "All of these stories, they end the same/you wreck your chances, and your left with shame/Sometimes I think I'm just a big mistake/and now I'm worse off, than what I tried to escape"
What characterizes this album is this overwhelming feeling of cruel nostalgia. It's like he misses the "fun years", even though I get the impression that those very years are what caused the years of misery and dullness that he had to go through. Life sucks, but I'm glad that he found a way to bounce back.
