Back when the 1914 ten dollar bill had farmers harvesting hemp. This was one of the very first federal reserve notes, it was also printed on hemp paper.

Because the stalks are far too tall, it's obvious that it's hemp and not wheat nor flax.

The saying, β€œa picture is worth a thousand words” certainly holds its merit in this photo of an early 20th century US Federal Reserve Note. Those unfamiliar with the modern hemp movement would say that the photo raises more questions than it does answers. However, this photo will serve as a valuable asset to those interested in hemp’s past–and its future!

1914 US Federal Reserve Note

It is interesting to note that this US currency, one in a series of several different currencies circulating at this time (e.g., Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates), was issued one year after the USDA published its famousΒ 1913 Yearbook, which was devoted solely to hemp. Lester Dewey wrote underΒ StackingΒ β€œHemp stalks which are to be stacked are bound in bundles about 10 inches in diameter…” which looks similar to that of the picture above.

The β€œHemp Bill” is available in the following series:

Large-Size Ten Dollar Note, Federal Reserve Note, Series 1914/Red SealSmall-Size Ten Dollar Note, Federal Reserve Note, Series 1915/Blue SealSmall-Size Ten Dollar Note, Federal Reserve Note, Series 1918/Blue Seal β€œThe back was designed by Clair Aubrey Huston;Farming, a scene in Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania, was engraved by Marcus W Baldwin;Β Industry, a mill in Joliet, Illinois, was engraved by HL Chorlton. The first day of issue was November 16, 1914.” – The Comprehensive Catalog of US Paper Money, All United States Federal Currency Since 1812, Sixth Edition, Gene Hessler, ppg. 173-176.

Clair Aubrey Huston was born in Philly in 1857 and did the front side of the 1944 $10/denomination.

Note that Pennsylvania produced hemp through the 1900’s, and the crop depicted on the currency is too tall to be wheat or flax, so it’s rather obvious that it’s hemp. Via #weeverywhereyouneverthere #weengineeryournaturalthoughts #HappyLaborDay #HempMoney #WEYNT

Did you know that the 1914 10 Dollar Bill was printed on Hemp Paper and that the picture on the back displays farmers plowing hemp? Check out the video & article at ihemphi.com that highlights a 1914 series $10 bill of a hemp harvest that is printed β€˜right on the money.’ The first Federal Reserve Bank notes were issued in 1914.
