When was the last time you helped others? When did you make somebody else feel special?
As we are so busy living our lives we sometimes forget about others. If you are here on social media, chances are you are not struggling with a shortage of water, food, electricity, education and housing. We often forget those who live life less fortunate. Those who had a setback in life. Those people who are in need of (your) help.
Helping others is actually hardwired to the brain. It stimulates the same parts of the brain that are stimulated by food and sex. Helping others may just be the key to living a life that is not only happier but also healthier, wealthier, more productive, and meaningful.
Giving must not make you feel entirely depleted and taken advantage of. Here are some tips on how to give without feeling hurt:
1. Find your passion - It is not how much we give, but how much love we put into that which we give. Find something you care about.
2. Give your time - The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver and more satisfying for the giver than the gift of money.
3. Give to organizations that you know will put it to fair use.
4. Being willing to give more than you receive, but still keeping your interest in sight.
The key is to find the approach that fits us. When we do, then the more we give, the more we stand to gain purpose, meaning and happiness—all of the things that we look for in life but are so hard to find.
