One of the questions i often get asked is whether it is ok to sell hei tiki pounamu...
My response has always been, we can only be exploited by others, not by ourselves.
Even our tipuna (ancestors) traded hei tiki pounamu to the early settlors.
I do not make hei tiki pounamu about living people. I do not have hei tiki made ready to sell. All of my hei tiki are commissioned pieces. The true details of each hei tiki I produce are only given to the recipient of that taonga. For me, the true value of hei tiki is knowledge contained within that hei tiki, a complete understanding of what is a hei tiki, why it is, how hei tiki came to be in the beginning and by whom, this and other esoteric knowledge is passed on by me to the recipients of hei tiki, downloaded by me.....
I say this because it is arrogance in the extreme by any human carver to say "i created this hei tiki". Either we are guided by the ancestors or we are human in our approch to create facsimiles of the taonga tuturu.
