Meet PavanKumar @pkr_greens_and_consultants from Chennai, India 🇮🇳 "I had a terrace garden since I was in grade 12. Over the years, I became passionate about gardening and growing food. In 2016, I finished my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and started an internship at an automotive company. However, my mind was on something else. I quit the company within three months of joining to establish a social start-up and turn my passion into a profession.
We help people grow their own vegetables by setting up their terrace gardens. We also create awareness and influence people by conducting gardening workshops in residential complexes, offices, clubs, schools and colleges. Our primary focus is on schools. We want children to learn where their food comes from.
We have slowly grown into a team of 15 people. In 9 months, we have installed over 300 terrace gardens and done several workshops. Part of our earnings go back to the society in the form of free saplings.
We introduced people to a unique concept of giving plants as return gifts. There is so much waste being generated today due to ostentatious material things that people buy for return gifts. We hope that we will be able to change this practice and influence others to make better choices. Recently we had an opportunity to provide 3000 plants for an Inspector General's daughter's wedding reception and the gift was truly appreciated by all guests.
I spend significant time learning organic farming practices. I grow most plants from seedlings in my home garden. So far I have saved seeds for 15 types of heirloom eggplants, 3 types of bitter gourd and 4 types of okra. I have also started collecting rare seeds from other people to multiply them in my garden and preserve them for future.
I am only 21 with not much insight into the business world neither do I have the network. In the past 9 months we have tried our best to reach every corner of the city. It has not been an easy ride. Even though our goal is to use business to drive social and environmental impact, we have to work hard to create awareness. But I am very happy pursuing my passion and contributing in my own way to a better society."
