Yesterday in my challenge group I talked about what an incredible gift it is to have strong and able bodies. Every day I work with patients that can’t stand by themselves, can’t walk, can’t sit up in bed without help, and many are wheelchair bound. I’m thankful for that daily reminder to never take my body, my strength, or my independence for granted, and to celebrate that awesome gift by MOVING, because I CAN! .

"My health journey began when I started experiencing a myriad of chronic symptoms. A range of GI issues including but not limited to gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation & many other symptoms such as being moody, irritable, depressed, anxious & experiencing hormonal acne. ⠀

I did what most of us were taught - I saw my PCP & GI doctors. Every test they ran came back normal. I was slowly accepting that this was a way of life as I got older. ⠀

Not too long after I woke up one day & decided this was not normal. I wasn’t supposed to feel this way day in & day out. I was on a mission to find out WHY my body was treating me this way. I found out it was quite the opposite - I had treated my body & mind a certain way for a very long time and this is what I got in return. Did I know better? No. Did I make changes? Absolutely.⠀

Little did I know that all of these symptoms I had been experiencing began at birth. So many other symptoms have been explained and addressed. Ones that no other doctor could tell me - only my own research & the help of my functional medicine practitioner. I discovered that food is indeed medicine. Give yourself too much of the wrong thing, that medicine can actually make you feel worse. Give your body the nourishing foods that it needs & you’re on your way to better health. I choose to eat all organic, pasture raised, local, sustainably sourced foods. The foods I eat are naturally gluten free, dairy free, grain free (for the most part), soy free & refined sugar free.I love restaurants like Picnik that cater to crowds who are trying to better their overall well being ☺️ ⠀

Changing my diet was the easiest part for me in my opinion. It’s such a huge, overlooked part of someone’s lifestyle. Eating the way I do has changed my life, body & mind for the remainder of my life. ⠀

Gut Health | It’s safe to say I have an obsession with the microbiota. This is probably a byproduct of the type of cases I see in clinic. In my experience many illnesses can be linked to imbalances in the microbiome. One of the biggest issues I come across is Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This condition manifests as an overgrowth of abnormal bacteria in the small intestine. Ordinarily the bacertia from the small bowel are moved out into the large bowel and the backwards movement of bacteria is prevented by a valve. Sometimes what happens is this becomes disturbed and the wrong bacteria begin to populate and ferment the food you eat. This results in symptoms including bloating, gas, nausea, reflux and even malnutrition. As the weather gets warmer I like to be outdoors a lot. Enjoying the sunshine and the fresh air, while moving my body or just chilling with friends, walking, picnicking, watching animals. 🐿🦆 It is also great for the soul.

If you start going like crazy now to get "summer ready" take it one step at a time. Don't expect weightloss, getting strong or toning up to happen quickly. Be aware of your eating habits, adjust it where you can and need to, but please don't ruin your body with quick fad diets.🍽 .

Focus on adjusting some of your habits instead. Like, increasing your water intake, specially when it's hot outside, eating more fruits and vegetables, focusing on different colours and getting at least a portion with every meal. 🍉🥑 Focusing on habits instead of dieting is just so much easier and more rewarding on the long term. This is a lifestyle, so the longer, healthier we want to live, the more we have to take care of our MIND - BODY and SOUL!💫 . 💦How much water do you drink a day?
