Q: How do you shoot comedy?
A: (@cgdop) I swear I've been asked this question recently, and by multiple people. My answer is: the same way I shoot everything else! I ask the director about the story s/he is trying to tell, and together we come up with a visual corollary for what the characters are going through. In the case of "The Orgy" @theorgyfilm, written and directed by Sam Baron @baronifish and produced by Tilly Wilding-Coulson @tillywcoulson, the story is about a guy, played by Amit Shah @amitshah044, who awkwardly goes to an orgy looking to fall in love. To illustrate this awkwardness, we elected to use a handheld camera, but to keep it mostly static and let the characters play within the confines of the frame. Many scenes in the film play out in these long, tableau oners, which both allowed the actors to pick their own comic timing, but also, crucially, gives the audience a similar 'stuck' feeling to that of our hero- painfully trapped in this social situation he can't extricate himself from, and we don't cut away from either. Many thanks to @arri_rental, @panaluxworld and @company_3, and our brilliant cast and crew. Feel free to ask me anything about this or for future posts- thanks for listening! 🙏
