Mechanical engineering concentrator Hunter Wallace, S.B. '20, chats with alumna Danielle Feinberg, A.B. '96, during a reception after the Sophomore Convocation. The event featured a panel of distinguished alumni who shared advice with more than 300 newly declared #harvardseas concentrators. Feinberg, director of photography at Pixar, emphasized how activities outside of class helped shape her career; she first watched a Pixar short film in an extracurricular graphics group that sparked her interest in animation.⠀

Panelists (from left) Stephanie Kladakis, S.B. ’96, Nathan Blecharczyk, A.B. ’05, Danielle Feinberg, A.B. ’96, Dean Frank Doyle, Julia Winn, A.B. ’12, and Daniel Nevius, S.B. ’11, shared advice with new SEAS concentrators during the second-annual SEAS Sophomore Convocation on Jan. 30. More than 300 recently declared SEAS concentrators in applied math, biomedical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, engineering sciences, and mechanical engineering packed a Science Center lecture hall to hear words of wisdom from SEAS students and alumni, and to meet their classmates. “Make sure you are always being challenged in whatever you are doing. You should think about your career as an iterative experience. It doesn’t really matter where you start, it matters where you end. And it will take a few hops to get there,” Blecharczyk said. “Any time when you are not being challenged is the right time to make a change.”⠀

Get to know a current Swedish Program Student!
Who: Carrington Walsh, Harvard '20, Economics
Why Swedish Program?: "I knew I wanted to go to Europe and study economics. I've also read a lot of Swedish books, and I wanted to see it in the real world."
Favorite memory (so far): "Exploring different coffee shops and people watching!"
Favorite thing about Stockholm: "All the food is really good, and it's a very diverse city!"
Looking forward to: "Traveling around and making more Swedish friends!"

This week I started grad school, and I was blown away at the level of AWESOME my classmates have reached - an international criminal attorney working in Cambodia, a writer for sustainable fashion bouncing between NYC and LA, a news anchor in Japan that has never reported in English, just to name a few. All of them with an overwhelming commonality of simply wanting to learn - to keep going, to push the envelope, to see where they can take this degree and not the other way around. I’m surrounded by inspiration and drive, and that’s the best way I could imagine starting out this semester. 📷: @chandler.grace

Alexis Ross, A.B. '20, speaks with Stephen Chong, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science, during a SEAS advising event. Ross said she is planning to concentrate in computer science and philosophy because of the interesting intersections between the logic side of philosophy and the theory side of computer science. "I really like coding, and seeing what you spend hours on come to life," she said. "Computer science involves a way to approach problems that I think can be applied to a wide range of fields. It makes you a more analytical thinker."⠀

During a #harvardseas Engineering Advising Event, newly declared sophomores Iulianna Taritsa, a biomedical engineering concentrator, and Brenden Rodriquez, an engineering sciences - mechanical engineering concentrator, shared their motivations for declaring. “I am interested in the medicine and healthcare fields after college. Biomedical engineering is a more innovative and hands-on approach to learn about medicine,” Taritsa said. Rodriquez ,on the other hand, said he has always loved to tinker, and an engineering degree will help him achieve his dream of becoming a naval aviator. Photo by @alanajoy_ful.⠀
