These are some happy hens as they finally get to have a nice shower. They do dust bath regularly as a natural cleaning method for them, but nothing beats a good dose of water to wash everything away. Im out collecting eggs in my rain boots and drizabone and it’s never felt better😊 I bought my drizabone at the beginning of winter and this is the first time it’s been worn. Note to self never be so organised again! #rainydays #happyhens #happysoil

Pulled aside some straw mulch that I only put down two weeks ago and the soil was moist, full of texture, and full of wormies! I pulled it aside so that I could transplant onion seedlings into this bed and direct seed some lettuce (onions and lettuce are recommended companion plants). The difference between this soil and the still-bare soil on some of our other beds was extreme. You'd never know that today's weather has been very hot and dry by the looks of this soil. Yay for mulch! #happysoil #gettingthere #earthworms

I believe there is an obvious winner in the stretch department. The Mango Kush has taken the lead over there Grapefruit Sour Diesel. Everything is nominal.

The war on Christmas came early this year to a population of fire ants threatening our base stalks. Diatomaceous Earth is being used as a 'deterrent' to keep our beds as healthy as possible. Read more about some of the organic pesticides we use @diatomaceousearthonline

My aunt & uncle are in town this weekend!
.
Generally, everyone lets me pick a clean restaurant, but darnit, we were limited to Maple Grove...which is about the same situation as almost everything outside of Mpls & StP-proper (food w/o identity)...
.
We went to 3 Squares (because they at least have a fun menu).
.
To my glorious surprise, there was ONE redeeming item on the menu!
.
Bison!
.
Not just ANY bison (which approx. 95% are given the feedlot treatment in the end anyway...true story) but NORTHSTAR BISON (100% grass-fed & located in WI)!
.
Flavor was awesome, as I already expected, but for crying out loud, I WISH chefs would be trained to learn the difference between cooking grass-fed vs. grain-fed...they DON'T cook up the same (my sister & uncle ordered the same thing & commented on how overcooked it was, too)!
.
Anywhoo...a little menu option manuevering & got it all worked out. I had to have almost everything else removed that came with the burger & also swapped out the fries w/ sweet potato fries (addicted to sweet potatoes) but thrilled for my one clean option!

Another of our favorite cover crops is annual ryegrass - we sell it by the pound for small gardens, and in 25# and 50# bags for large gardens and/or overseeding lawns for an abundance of green grass in winter and spring. Ryegrass dies out in the summer heat, usually around June, though you can mow and till it earlier as needed. The benefit of growing ryegrass, both in the lawn and in the garden, is that you're growing your own compost! You cannot buy enough organic matter for your garden's health needs, so grow it in the wintertime and your soil will thank you with healthier plants and tastier food!⠀

***This is also one of the easiest organic matter cover crops to cut with the standard homeowner lawnmower and/or weed eater. Heavier farm-sized equipment is not necessary - some other cover crops need a tractor to mow them down and chew them up.⠀

Some of the best winter cover crops are also edible! Mustard greens, rape, and tillage radishes are three of our favorite cover crop vegetables. This is a mixture of curly mustard and annual ryegrass (or is that just a weedy grass? Hard to tell...all I know is we do plant both annual ryegrass and these edible crops in the fall and winter). These crops can be planted now through March, though they will be very slow-growing in the heart of winter. ⠀

Meet our expert and co-founder @al_newsom 😊Al has spent the last three decades of his life as a horticulturist, home gardener and landscape designer. He owned a design/build landscape company and garden retail shop called City Gardener, which he sold after 16 years. He has since been working for Ball Seed Company for 18 years, introducing new plant varieties to the trade and developing marketing programs and strategies for commercial growers. With Gardening as one of his passions (along with art, music and traveling), he co-founded GOOD DIRT in order to connect with people on a larger scale. His hope is that everyone catches the "gardening fever." 🌿🌿🌿

Do you have some garden beds that you aren't going to plant this fall/winter? Do you have any land that needs a rest after many seasons of intensive growing, or a space that has some winter weed pressures that you want to fix? Think about growing some cover crops this fall and winter! Pictured here is crimson clover in full bloom in April. Plant this annual legume between now and Thanksgiving and it will add nitrogen to your soil all winter (lessening your need for Nitrogen fertilizer next spring/summer!), compete with our wintertime weeds like henbit and chickweed, increase your soil health and tilth (texture) and prevent erosion during heavy rains. Crimson clover is basically an all-star workhorse for your garden. We will sow many of our farm's fields with clover in November when our earliest fall plants are finished and our latest summertime crops are cleaned up after the first killing frost. ⠀

As we inch closer to the Autumn season, the time when things change. . .weather, daylight, diets, the natural landscape; let's chat a little about SUSTAINABILITY-one of our favorite words in the dictionary. Ecologically speaking it is "the ability to endure" but why not go a step further? Instead of merely just keeping up with the change, let's make everything better (and no, we don't mean that pumpkin spice flavoring in your latte)! For our environment to really go greener, yes, we need to focus on sustainability but also the process of REGENERATION: actually restoring the Earth to a better moment. For us that means that our proprietary ingredient, BogBits, are resourced from a spot that is regenerated 70x than the rate of harvest. And our one-of-a-KIND dirt bags are filled at a zero-waste manufacturing facility. Why? Because being KIND to the environment means more than just preserving it for future generations, it means changing everything from our business practices to our community's agriculture, to our home lifestyle, to our backyard gardens in order to make the world BETTER than we found it. #BeTheChange 🍁♻️🌎How do you practice regeneration?🍁
