If you are as old as I am, you might remember when bandanas were soft, I mean really soft. Today's "Made in China" bandanas might say, 100% cotton, but why the heck are they so stiff? So, vintage bandanas have become one more thing I've added to my estate sale checklist.
Bandanas actually have a long and interesting history in the US. Martha Washington commissioned a bandana design featuring her husband George. Bandanas have been used in political campaigns and as an advertising medium. Striking coal miners wore them as a sign of unity, giving us the term "Redneck". During WWII women tied up their hair with bandanas and got to work in factories. Over the years bandanas have become symbolic of the farmer, the cowboy, the worker, and the American spirit.
