Sometimes, things don't go as planned on the homestead. I usually keep my feed here free of the ugly side of homesteading, but I decided to share this. +
Our last post here on Instagram was of Marty's newborn calf. Unfortunately, that calf died in less than 24 hours. She went from walking and nursing in the morning to limp and unresponsive at noon. Despite everything we did, she died an hour after we found her. +
Anna and I did a post mortem on the calf, and from several things we found, we are pretty sure she died of sepsis and shock. How a calf gets blood poisoning that quickly out on pasture...I just don't know. +
So we are now milking an Angus beef cow. Marty's been amazingly good about standing to be milked. Especially considering this cow is kinda on the wild side.
