Ya’ll i did a thing tonight - 1st run post hamstring/calf tear and first run since like last fall. I was really good about taking it easy and paying attention to my body - i was prepared to stop after 30 seconds but i actually felt really good - i’ve been working rly hard to rebuild strength in that leg and i think it’s paying off 👏 my back felt good too! I’ll let you know how i feel tmrw 😂🤞💩

Chris Paul of the Houston Rockets on the floor of the Toyota Center court after injuring his hamstring in a thrilling 98-94 win over the Golden State Warriors in game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. Hamstring injuries are very common in sports and are graded from 1-3 based on the severity of the strain or tear. Typical healing time can be as short as 1-3 weeks for grade 1 strains or as long as 3-6 months for grade 3 or complete tears that require surgery. Grade 1 and 2 strains are usually treated with initial icing, compression and elevation of the affected extremity. This is followed after 2-3 days by gradual range of motion exercises. Later treatment will include passive stretching and eventual eccentric and concentric strengthening exercises. A rehabilitation program involving progressive agility and trunk stabilization exercises is used to promote return to play and prevent injury recurrence. Hamstring injuries are one of the most common muscle injuries in sport, especially sports involving sprinting, rapid change of direction, acceleration, and deceleration.

Risks factors for hamstring strain according to level 1 evidence (systematic review) (1). Most consistent risks:
▶️Age: older age = significant risk factor for hamstring strain.
▶️Previous injury: previous hamstring injury is a risk for future hamstring injury. Other injuries (e.g. ACL rupture, calf strain, groin pain) increased risk of hamstring injury.
▶️Quadriceps peak torque: increased peak torque = increased risk for hamstring strain.

Other risks present in literature, however require further research due to poor quality of studies or weak associations:
▶️Muscle balance (hamstring:quads): some association with altered quadriceps and hamstring balance (H:Q ratio), however not as conclusive as previously thought.
▶️Muscle balance (hamstrings:hamstrings): differences in eccentric hamstring strength between sides is predictive of injury.
▶️Hamstring flexibility: inconclusive evidence, some link with reduced AKE.
▶️Other joint / muscle flexibility: reduced hip extension = increased hamstring risk. Quadriceps flexibility and ankle ROM some association.
▶️Others: playing position, ethnicity, weight, proprioception .
If you have had a hamstring strain, or have a number of the risks associated, it is advisable to consider injury prevention/rehabilitation to lower risk of future injury.

Sometimes laughing is the only way to get through a bad situation. After this week's Ortho follow up, I obtained my pelvic MRI disk and wrote on the cover.

DX: Low-grade partial tear at the origin of the right hamstring, measuring 8mm. Underlying edema is present within the adjacent bone.
Plan of action... More rehab and PRP injection. Here's to hoping I don't need surgery.

One month ago I could NOT do this. In fact I was nowhere near even close to being able to do this. 🙈 This is the hamstring I tore 3 summers ago, which has been SUPER SLOW recovery... a process of one step forward two steps back. Basically a total pain in my ass to recover from. But, finally, after two months of weekly Reformer sessions with Bridget O'Keefe Dunn here I am! Thank you Bridget for helping me get back to the basics strengthening not only muscles I didn’t know I had, but for also empowering me from within. 😘

⚠ Hamstring Crisis⚠

Are we missing the point?

Unfortunately the Adelaide Football Club is undergoing what the media has termed a "hamstring crisis". In short they've suffered approximately 9 hamstring issues over the last 7 weeks.

As an industry we tend to blame Hamstring-factors for it's failure. It wasn't strong or conditioned enough and/or it wasn't flexible enough.

But sometimes we don't see the forest for the trees.

We often lack the necessary perspective to realise that a Hamstring doesn't get injured because it fails in the moment, it fails because it can no longer tolerate the mechanical environment that it exists within.

We forget that the Hamstring directly responds to the functional state of your lower back and hips.
If your back is constantly overloaded by poor shapes, positions and postures the Hamstrings can get "recruited" to tighten and help support.

Secondarily, our Hamstring function can become compromised if our hips are stiff (again, not necessarily painful). Thanks to years of sitting in this modern world our Hamstrings are now more likely to have a relative handbrake on due to their direct anatomical connection to the hip.

Modifications to training, strength work and Hamstring flexibility may certainly help an athlete's risk of injury on some level - but only because it reduces moments that might expose bad Hamstring mechanics and loading that already exist.

So please understand this... Hamstring issues are not an issue of activity + use. They are a failure to tolerate use because of an un-noticed build up of bad mechanics - most likely from our more non-athletic, passive moments. In short, if you sit in a bad shape or posture often enough and/or for long enough then you will unknowingly put your Hamstrings (amongst a whole host of other tissues) at risk of dysfunction. - Grant
