Half Moon Farm, in its infancy and loaded with potential. I said to someone the other day, give me 10 years and this place could come up alright. I'm in for the long haul. #hamptonqld #smallholding #marketgardening #hotdecember #rainwouldbenice

I've gone bananas. After 10 years in a lovely little frost hollow, it's time to embrace my new warm temperate/subtropical status instead of pining for the cold. I'm starting with a Lady Finger and a Pisang Ceylan, tissue cultured, disease free plants from Blue Sky Bananas up at Tully. These beauties will be potted up and grown on until the wet season fires up in November and conditions are better for planting. I've got an ideal, reasonably moist, frost free site earmarked...can't wait to harvest my first ever bunch 🍌 #backyardbananas #organicfruit #homegrown #hamptonqld #halfmoonfarm

Love me some winter skies 😍#winterskies #hamptonqld #drivingoffintothesunsett

Yup, definitely home #hamptonqld #allthefog

We have a gravel floor. We have recycled timber shelves. We have golden light. A couple of finishing touches in the morning and our farm stand will be ready to open. Keep an ear open for an announcement! #roadsidestall #farmstand #farmgate #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

Delicious #vegieburger for lunch- after my morning tourism marketing meeting locally- It was way to big to eat it all though. Great to find yummy #vegetarian options locally @flavours.at.hampton #hamptonqld #sqcountry @dinedarlingdowns #toowoombaregion

Winter tomato flowers on a self sown plant. After a decade gardening in a frost hollow, I'm adjusting to a new, balmier reality. #microclimates #globalwarming #tomatoflowers #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

I've decided to give Cera Traps a go on my bigger freestanding fruit trees like mangoes, persimmons and this guava. They're not the cheapest option available, but I'm hoping they'll prove the most effective. Anyone got tips for getting the most out of them? #fruitfly #queenslandfruitfly #organicorchard #hamptonqld #desperatetopickorganicmangoes

There goes the old ant bed tennis court. Rob from @hampton_blue_blueberries is starting the process of transforming it into our first veg garden plot on the new farm. The next step is to rake out as many grass runners as possible, then we'll sow a green manure. This will be tilled in, then we'll tarp the space to help reduce weed germination before planting our first crops. My deadline for harvest is mid-May 2017, when @paulwesttilba is joining us for an event as part of next year's @hamptonfestival. It feels (and smells) great to break ground. Thanks for your help Rob! #marketgardening #hamptonqld #organicfarming #redsoil

Ridiculously happy (apparently) to have spent the afternoon with Di @awassiqueensland and Gordon @emperorspork - two farmers and a city slicker. #toowoombacarnivalofflowers

One of my guiding philosophies is "choose life", but the only good cane toad is a dead cane toad. This one got to kiss the toe of my boot and will help feed a rhubarb plant. #introducedspecies #feral #invasive #toxic #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

If you've never propagated a plant from cuttings and are keen to have a go, a good place to start is with rosemary. It's a bit of a doddle. Just strip off some of the lower leaves, scratch off a sliver of the bark at the base to expose the light green cambium layer, dip into some rooting hormone (though they usually strike well without it) and pop into a reasonably loose cuttings mix. Keep a cover over the tray, water daily and in around a month you should have a new plant that's genetically identical to its parent. The variety in this pic is Gallipoli, brought back to Australia by a First World War digger who collected it while on the Turkish battlefield. It's a tough plant with a beautiful piney flavour. I love it! #rosemary #gallipoli #propagation #cuttings #culinaryherbs #droughtolerantplants #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

According to this month's @gourmettraveller mag, the ideal Katso sando is made using rare breed kurobuta pork. We can't help but agree. #emperorspork

I'm forecasting a bumper macca season. The trees are dripping with flowers and there's a steady hum of bees going about their business. Good stuff! #macadamiatrees #springonthefarm #smallscalefarming #organicnuts #bushfoods #australianplants #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

I'm looking forward to some bumper harvests from this little beauty. It's a tamarillo (aka tree tomato, aka Solanum betaceum) - one of my all time favourite fruits and something that wasn't quite hardy enough to hack the frosts in my last garden. Here, where frosts are light and few, it should thrive. An aside: Thumbs down to the nursery that supplied the plant for going completely overboard on the packaging. Let the plant do the talking or find a better marketing alternative to gaudy bits of plastic. #tamarillo #solanaceae #waronwaste #nurseryindustryfail #warmtemperate #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

"The most important things to remember are: the ribs have to be dry-rubbed, cooked slow, mopped with sauce and, just when you think you’re done, add more sauce! Best served with coleslaw – mmm... flavour town." Poh Ling Yeow, Poh & Co. SBS.

A tale of two composts. Homemade on the left, mushroom on the right. We're planting rhubarb crowns of the same variety into each bed. Typically, rhubarb likes slightly acidic soil, so planting into the mushy compost (which is limed, and therefore slightly alkaline) is something of an experiment. I'll report back in a few month's time. #compost #carbonsequestration #organicmatter #feedthesoil #marketgarden #perennialedibles #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

Radish flowers. Despite the fact that the punters in this part of the world don't go as ballistic for radishes as Kim Jong Whatshisface does for nukes, I plan to save seed from these beauties to sow in early autumn. I WILL make radish converts! #seedsaving #heirloomvegetables #openpollinated #radish #marketgarden #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

Some rhubarb crowns fell off the back of a truck. Actually, they were gifted to us by some friends down the road who gleaned them from a neglected paddock that's being ripped up and planted with avocados. There's 30 or so decent crowns in this lot and dozens of stems. We'll pot up some to sell on our farm stand and will plant the rest. Thanks Chip and Jo! What a score! #rhubarb #gleaning #perennialvegetables #rhubarbisnotafruit #latewinter #bareroot #stewedappleandrhubarb #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

Seeding, seeding and more seeding. A couple of varieties to go then it's on to bed prep and direct seeding. I ❤️seeds! #propagation #vegetableseed #latewinter #sprinter #springiscoming #marketgardening #smallscalefarming #farmlifeforever #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

After a 10 year layoff, we're back into worm farming (my last lot of wrighlers froze in a -10 frost in 2007). This time the plan is to start small, get the system humming, then gradually expand to the point where we can close the fertility loop and make all the liquid fertiliser necessary to feed seedlings and other hungry plants. Poor old Richard Roxburgh is about to get digested. #wormfarm #wormjuice #rake #liquidfertiliser #closedloopsystem #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld

A handful of these a couple of times a week and you'll live to be 100. Maybe. #nagamikumquat #citrusseason #organicallygrown #potplant #halfmoonfarm #hamptonqld
