After last week’s Swatch and Learn #letsswatchandlearn, I thought it would be fun to share 5 things you might not know about copper! 🔸For this swatch I used @colourpopcosmetics Ultra Glossy Lip in “Cheat Code”. I have two versions, one super glossy, and one after blotting, which basically transforms it into a gorgeous metallic. -Copper was the first metal to be used by man, as far back as 8000 B.C. Some time later we discovered that if you mix it with tin it becomes a stronger metal know as bronze... this by the way is where the Bronze Age gets it’s name. However, tin isn’t the only thing it mixes with… today we have come up with over 500 alloys that blend copper with other metals. -Some types of sea crustacea actually have blue blood due to having a higher copper content rather than iron which is what makes ours red. -The metal itself is actually antimicrobial, how cool is that?! These properties do not wear off and are effective even when scratched. This is why brass doorknobs are a great choice for public buildings since the copper found in brass helps prevent the spread of disease.
-As we saw last week, copper generally oxidizes into a blueish-green patina, which actually acts as a protective barrier to prevent further corrosion. However, in dry climates, the lack of moisture causes copper to just dull into a less shiny, nut brown color. So I guess if the Statue of Liberty lived in Phoenix, she might not be the pretty green color we know her as today.
