The time came to shape our challah rolls, my children crowded around to learn, including my son. In our Jewish practice, and the Judaism we practice in our home, gender has no bearing on your responsibilities or privileges as a Jew. Although baking, and separating the challah is something women do across all Jewish tradition, my son really wanted to separate the challah, and I did no have the heart to choose his sisters over him.
I will not close doors on my children.
As for me, I hadn't separated the challah before, and I found it to be very meaningful. Before I can eat, I acknowledge that this food is a gift. This little family of mine is a gift. Being Jewish is a gift. Gd could have just as easily cursed me to live hungry, cold and alone. So I am grateful. #hafrashatchallah #Shabbatprep #SefardiJews #ProgressiveJews #greekjews
