Here is a few other benefits of building lean muscle at 40+. Building lean muscle fortifies the tendons, ligaments and bones. By doing this you minimise your risk of injury.
Lean muscle makes everyday activities such as lifting, bending and stretching easier.
Menopausal women between 40-50 years old will lose 1% of muscle mass each year. Muscle mass helps you hold your posture better which in turn can help alleviate back pain.

I've said it before and will say it again, muscle and fat weight exactly the same BUT muscle is more dense and so takes up less room meaning your overall body mass is smaller BUT the number on the scale is often the same. Body measurements are so much more effective in tracking your progress.

What can you do today to get 10% closer to your food and fitness goals?

I was listening to a podcast by Daretogrow last week for Mental Health Awareness day and Lisa asked the question "What could you do to make yourself feel 10% better?" This is a great approach to not only taking care of our mental health but also when working towards our food and fitness goals.
If we look at the positive habits we are working on to create the food and fitness goals we desire and ask ourselves each time we make a choice, whether that action is getting us 10% closer or 10% further away from what we want to achieve I am pretty sure this approach will create more positive habits.

Which steps are you taking to optimise your food and fitness?

This quote came up on my feed yesterday and really resonated with me. When you embark on making changes to your food and fitness its a big decision and an investment in yourself. There is a tendency to want to go "all out" and address and change many things in one go.

What's going on in the inside of our bodies is as important as what the outside presents.
Cholesterol levels do have a link to heart disease and with obesity rates at an all time high this is concerning. In simple terms cholesterol is the amount of fat within your blood. LDL (low density lipo-proteins) are the bad cholesterol and so managing cholesterol levels is a sensible choice to make.

It made me smile as it reminded me of a conversation with a client who told me on our initial consultation that they would not be eating tofu under any circumstances. They had this idea that working on their food and fitness meant being pummelled to within an inch of their lives and having to force themselves to "enjoy" foods they didn't really like in the name of good health.

Every client i talk too has been on a diet, often with short term success. Many diets work on restricting food groups such as carbohydrates. If you have tried one of thse diets you will also know how you felt, possibly experiencing fatique, irritability and mood swings.

Weight loss is muscle, fat and water but fat loss is exactly that - loss of fat. In order to sustain a desirable weight, lose body fat and increase lean muscle we need all food groups.
