Have you ever been on a diet?

Every client i talk too has been on a diet, often with short term success. Many diets work on restricting food groups such as carbohydrates. If you have tried one of thse diets you will also know how you felt, possibly experiencing fatique, irritability and mood swings.

Weight loss is muscle, fat and water but fat loss is exactly that - loss of fat. In order to sustain a desirable weight, lose body fat and increase lean muscle we need all food groups.

Yesterday I asked you if you are experiencing weight gain, lack of energy and reduced flexibility as you hit your 40's, not surprisingly many of you are experiencing all three.

The impact of the peri-menopause and the fluctuation of oestrogen levels will be an influencing factor, but the good news is that with the right food and fitness for you these negative effects can be reduced and at the same time you are implementing strategies to prepare your body the best you can for the menopause.

Do you think you have ruined all your hard work over the summer with little fitness and endless food?
Do you feel like you are back to square one?

A month off over the summer is not going to put you back to square one.
Is it going to take work and discipline to get back to where you were pre - summer, yes it is.
Can you expect to go back to exercise in exactly the same place you left of with the same weights and reps - no, this is not a good idea. Take a couple of weeks to re-condition your body and build up gradually, this is a far better way to build on what you have already done and build success rather than straight back in on the same pre-summer weights and reps which is going to hurt, likely cause injury and then just frustration and the feeling of failure.

Is it a walk along the beach and getting active?
Is it planning your breakfast for the week?
Is it getting your hydration right?

Its the time of year when over indulgence from the summer holidays is resulting in people reaching out to address their food and fitness and looking at 1-1 PT options. Have you ever felt intimidated by the array of equipment in the gym?

Gyms are not always client friendly and going into the gym not really knowing how and what to use the equipment for, its easy to stick to the equipment you know such as the treadmill, Lat pull down and workouts are a bit adhoc.
Resistance training is necessary for the 40+ client, it has many benefits including maintaining done density and muscle mass which naturally decrease as we mature. In simple terms decrease in muscle mass = decrease in metabolism = weight gain. The right resistance training strengthens the posterior chain decreasing issues with lower back pain.

Lifting weights will not make you bulky. Women simply don't have the genetics to achieve this, but we do have the genetics to achieve tone and definition which not only looks great but means we can carry on burning calories even when we have left the gym and keeps our metabolism ticking over.
Try a simple routine at home with 2 x 5KG dumbbells.
10 x lunges,
10 x shoulder press,
10x bent over rows.
Repeat 3 sets of each.
No dumbbells available, use water bottles or tin cans as an alternative.

What's your favourite restaurant?

We are very lucky with a range of very good and very nice restaurants, from Friday brunch to long, lazy breakfasts we are spoilt for choice.

Eating out should be a pleasure and not an experience of scanning the menu for everything your "can't" have as you are "on a diet" or "being good." This is no fun and takes the enjoyment out of the process.

I am travelling at the moment and making the most of the local "real" produce.

Eat 5 timers per day with 3 meals and 2 snacks. Its not about how little you eat its about eating the right amounts of the right foods. Too often I see women starving themselves in order to lose weight - it will not work in the long term. if you are stuck for snack ideas try a handful of walnuts, a hardboiled egg, a handful of coconut. Keep the food real , nothing packaged and keep the portion size to a palm-full.

What natural flavour do you add to your water?

I am an advocate of drinking a lot of water. Its a simple thing to do and has many benefits including minimising fatique and helping transport nutrients which in turn gives you energy.
If my hydration is not on point I notice the effects pretty quickly.
As much as I love water I often want something with flavour so use what I have available to infuse the water.

I am currently in Tuscany and my apartment is called Rosmarino which is Italian for Rosemary. Each of the apartments is named after a herb including Basilico, Rosmarino and Timo.
There is an abundance of Rosemary growing in the garden so I am using what I have at hand to flavour my water.
Just add the rosemary to water and leave overnight. I find it infuses better if I leave the water out of the fridge. Once the flavour has developed overnight, refrigerate if you prefer chilled water. I also have tomatoes, lemons

When you work with Food and Fitness by Louise it's not just the aesthetics that matter, but how you feel is equally important.

I am noticing a big difference in energy levels. My husband used to always say he couldn’t get me out in an evening and I never felt like I wanted to go anywhere as I didn’t have the energy. I now play 9 holes/go to driving range/out for an evening without feeling like I can’t be bothered. I used to suffer with chronic bloating and pain during the time of the month but am noticing a real difference with less bloating and pain beforehand.

I have never been very good at team sport and I used to dread PE lessons. My hand-eye-coordination and spatial awareness is not great so when I first started training I had low confidence about exercise in general. Now I really enjoy leading a healthy lifestyle and I love the way exercise makes me feel. I like setting goals for myself and achieve my personal best rather than compare myself to others. I will never be a brilliant athlete, however, I do like to stay active, work-out and follow a healthy diet as it has a positive impact on all areas of my life and makes me feel happier more energetic. The experience has been totally positive and I have become stronger, healthier, fitter and leaner as a result.
