Something way different than the owl in my previous post. A caecilian from the jungle in Peru, the 3rd group of amphibians besides frogs and salamanders, these are notorious for how difficult they are to find. It's more likely a result of their subterranean lifestyle than anything else, but regardless seeing one of these is an exceptionally rare treat. This is a juvenile Caecilia species but unsure of which one. .

Had so much fun learning about caecilian coolness: skulls, natural history, and phallodea. Thank you, @frogsneedourhelp . #amphibiousaf #retroarticularmandibularprocesses #tentacularorgan #annuli #gymnophiona

Not a smirking earthworm but the Ringed Caecilian (Siphonops annulatus). I know it has a bit too much tail for #frogfriday but nevertheless it is a class of amphibia (Gymnophiona). They are widely distributed in South America east of the Andes. Quite remarkable is the maternal care for the nestlings which feed with special teeth on mothers' outer skin layer.

My lifer non-captive Caecilians, unfortunately dead on the road. Caecilians live in the soil and for this reason not many people know about them. Some species have eyes and others have very reduced eyes covered by skin. They are often encountered during periods of heavy rain when they may come to the soil surface. Many exhibit parental care, guarding eggs and even feeding offspring their shedded skin.

Siphonops annulatus (ringed caecilian)
A representative of the little-known third group of amphibians — Gymnophiona (Frogs belong to Anura, and salamanders belong to Urodela.) — that is widely distributed throughout South America east of the Andes, the ringed caecilian is found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, dry savanna, moist savanna, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, pastureland, plantations, rural gardens, and heavily degraded former forest. It varies in color from blue to bluish-black to slate, the annular grooves edged in white or cream. It may stretch to a length of 250-450 millimeters, and its prey consists of earthworms and other subterranean invertebrates. Females lay clutches of eggs and guard them; the young exhibit maternal dermatologist, feeding on the outer layer of skin from their mother. They are not currently classified as threatened.

I only check on these guys every couple of months or so. Most people know that frogs and toads and newts and salamanders are amphibians. There is another group of amphibians though known as the class Gymniphiona. These amphibians are called caecillians. Most either are aquatic or fossorial, come from the tropics, and feed on worms or other small invertebrate prey. They have rather large teeth for these size. This species is Herpele squalostoma. #amphibian #weird #rare #caecillian #gymnophiona #pet #pets #petsofinstagram

Typhlonectes compressicauda (Cayenne caecilian)
A member of the enigmatic caecilians — limbless amphibians — this species is often erroneously sold in the pet trade as “rubber eels.” The flattened body has numerous transverse folds, which gives the appearance of segments. Typhlonectids are more derived than most other caecilians. The eyes are functionless, and senses its prey by touch or through vibrations. They feed on small invertebrates and fish. Slime glands occur over much of the body, and it produces a noxious slime when threatened.
