Last week Wednesday, I had the privilege to witness the launch of Diversity School Initiative. It was an incredible evening, where people were given the opportunity to discuss inclusivity and representation. Some of the stories I heard about certain drama school really threw me off. One girl reported being racially abused at LAMDA several times, from a teacher who's apparently done it to other students for years. Why this woman is still working there I don't know. "The Diversity School Initiative is a non-profit campaign organisation set up to address under-representation and diversity in UK drama schools.
We want to help hold drama schools accountable for their decisions concerning diversity and to support students who report feeling underrepresented at drama schools. We believe that everyone should be given a fair and equal opportunity to train, to learn, to experiment and to fulfil their potential regardless of gender, ability, ethnicity, social status, nationality, faith, sexuality or sexual orientation. The creative arts industry as we know it today does not currently reflect the diversity of the UK.
As members of The Diversity School Initiative, we will challenge UK Drama Schools to develop a more inclusive curriculum, faculty and student body, in order to be more reflective of the world around us. As well as this, we will support students affected by these issues by providing a mentorship scheme and a network." .
